Latest Trade Deal: Kansas City Chiefs Set to Re-sign $80 Million Star in 1-year Deal!
The Chiefs signed All-Pro defensive end Chris Jones to a new 1-year contract to end their hold on him.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs signed Chris Jones to a new one-year contract Monday that should end the All-Pro defensive end and could mean he’ll be back on the field when they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.
The Chiefs did not disclose the terms, but a source told The Associated Press that no years were added to his four-year, $80 million contract that was set to expire.
The person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deal, said it instead includes incentives to significantly increase Jones’ income this season.
“Chris is an elite player in this league and has truly developed into a leader for our team over the last seven years,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement.
“He contributed to our success and Super Bowl championship, and keeping him fit for the Chiefs was a priority for us.” Veach praised Jones’ agent Jason and Michael Katz for their work on the deal.
Agents followed Jones to Kansas City last week and sat next to him in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Chiefs’ season-opening loss to Detroit.
“Two things were obvious,” Veach said, “Chris wanted to be boss and the Katz brothers worked hard for him.”
Jones gave up a $500,000 coaching bonus, was fined $50,000 each day for missing mandatory minicamp and all of training camp and lost nearly $1.1 million in his first game check in week one.
It is unclear whether the provisions of his new contract allow Jones to recoup the millions he has already lost. The Chiefs’ statement did not address what might happen next season.
The club could still sign Jones to a long-term deal, use the franchise tag — and potentially trade him — or let him leave in free agency. AD Jones is coming off perhaps the best year of his seven-year career.
He had a career-best 15 1/2 sacks and easily led the Kansas City defense in collecting his first career postseason sacks.
He also had four pass breakups, forced a
pair of fumbles, had one fumble and
helped lead the Chiefs to their second
Super Bowl title in the last four years.
In addition to earning his first All-Pro
first-team selection and being voted to his
fourth consecutive Pro Bowl, Jones, 29,
finished third in AP defensive tackle
behind Nick Bosa of the 49ers and Micah
Parsons of the Cowboys. a year in the
year.
Jones was signed about a week after he
returned to Kansas City from his home in
Miami, where he spent the entire
offseason working out.
Although he did not report to superiors at
the time, Jones spent about 90 minutes
with sick children and their families
during a visit to Ronald McDonald House
Charities. In his only public statement,
Jones said, “Hopefully it works out.
My goal has always been to be a Kansas
City Chief for the rest of my life. I’ve said
it many times on social media, in
interviews and they know. where I stand.”
AD Jones was rumored to want a contract
that would exceed several recent
defensive deals, but it would be less than
the Rams’ Aaron Donald, who hit the
market with a three-year, $96 million
deal.
That would mean a four-year, $90 million
deal between the Giants’ Dexter
Lawrence and the Chiefs’ Daron Payne, a
four-year, $95 million deal with the
Titans’ Jeffrey Simmons and a four-year,
$96 million deal with the Jets. . Quinn
Williams.
“I kept in touch with my teammates. I
worked out every day and did the same
things they did in training camp,” Jones
said. “I will be ready when the time
comes.
