Former Tottenham player Anton Walkes died in a boating accident in the US.

 


Professional football player Anton Walkes has died from injuries sustained in a boating accident off the coast of Miami, US authorities said Thursday.

Walkes, 25, played for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer in the US MLS.


 


According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, he was found unconscious and taken to a hospital after two boats collided in the Miami Marine Stadium pool on Wednesday. The state agency said in a statement that Walkes was piloting one of the overturned boats.

 

It is not clear if anyone else was injured, but the agency has launched an investigation into the boating accident. Walkes started his career at Tottenham and then joined Portsmouth, from where he moved to the United States last year.

 

 

Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said everyone at the club was devastated by the tragic death of Anton Walkes.

 

“He was a wonderful son, father, partner and teammate whose joyful outlook on life touched everyone he met,” Tepper said in a club statement.

Walkes joined Charlotte in the club’s debut MLS season in 2022. He made 23 appearances this season and scored 21 goals and scored five goals.

“Anton improved those around him in all areas of life and represented Charlotte FC at the highest level both on and off the field,” said Tepper. MLS released a statement saying “there are no words to describe the sadness across Major League Soccer today.”

 

“Anton was a talented and dedicated player who was loved by his teammates and fans,” the statement read.

Charlotte FC teammate Jaylin Lindsey said she was “heartbroken” to hear the news. “Fly high my brother, you are the best teammate I could ask for,” Lindsey tweeted. “I love you man.”

 

Tottenham Hotspur also tweeted: “We are

deeply saddened to hear of the passing of

former player Anton Walkes. The thoughts

of everyone at the club are with his family

and friends at this incredibly sad time.
