Marlie Packer reacts to winning WXV1 and World Player of the Year

It was a historic night for Marlie Packer, the England captain who lifted the world’s first WXV 1 trophy after defeating 2021 Rugby World Cup opponents New Zealand. Packer also won the rugby and best individual awards.

Ulster v Munster looked set to be the only game this weekend without a neutral referee. Correct me if I’m wrong

France had the talent to win the boxes but not the killer instinct – a recent podcast described playing RSA as “fighting a raccoon”. Must win – the French coach also forgot that RSA lacked a starting hook and an outside centre. He also forgot to take Dupont off when FRA were on 60 points against Namibia before losing his captaincy and 9 points in a meaningless game. He also forgot the goal when Eben received a yellow card. I hope FRA wins in 2027 if RSA doesn’t – mostly b/c I think the French were great hosts, so here’s some friendly advice. 1) Your back is soft – need more mongrol for 6, 7 and 8 – they are too soft, a bit too high 2) Your locks are too light – Willems return should help 3) Ntamack needs meat – he looks too light, for survive RWC: out of 4) I think Dante and Feku (sp?) are crap – one is too slow and the other didn’t do much in the tournament.

With legendary All Black Tana Umaga steering the ship as head coach, Moana Pasifika are chasing a key finals spot ahead of their third Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Moana Pasifika had important victories over the Hurricanes, Brumbies and Waratahs in the first two seasons, but the Pasifika team otherwise struggled for consistency.

But Moana made some impressive moves in the offseason. They have assembled a world-class coaching staff that includes Tana Umaga, ex-Wales manager Stephen Jones and ex-Blues assistant Tom Coventry – and that’s just the beginning. Wing Julian Savea, affectionately known as Bussi at the peak of his All Blacks career, also leads a talented playing group that includes props Sekope Kepu, Chrisitan Lealiifano and Danny Toala.

There are many reasons to be optimistic about where Moana Pasifika is headed as a team, and for coach Umaga, that means setting the bar for a first finals berth.

“We want to win more than one game,” Umaga said, according to Stuff.

“We want to get going. I’m not big on openly setting big goals. Related

The Wallabies have a systemic problem. Coach Jones is only one man and no mere mortal can stop the Australian rugby giant from falling as hard as they did.

“I believe we can push for the top eight. Only four teams missed out, so we want to challenge in this area.

“But if we can work week in week out, we can get that one win and hopefully we can put something together. “That’s what we can aim for because at the moment we haven’t shown anything that we’re worth more.

Moana Pasifika have brought in 19 new

players to their squad ahead of the 2024

season, with many of their recruits making

an impact in the New Zealand NPC and

elsewhere in Europe.

In another big tick, the same number of

players wore their country’s colors at the

Rugby World Cup in France. But as Umaga

said, the hunt for the football final will not

be easy.

“As a coach, we have to try to develop them

and adapt the learning to suit them, do

everything we can to help them progress in

our game,” Umaga added.

“If it was easy, everyone would be doing it,

so we have to make sure we are efficient

with our time and teaching, but we have a

group that is keen.

“That’s the most important thing, they have

the energy to

take advantage of this opportunity and I

explained to them that it’s an opportunity

and they have to grab it with both hands.

“You get it on signing day, but it’s hard work

to support yourself in this game and call.

“Some are having fun and we still have to

feed them. Keep them going so they can take

advantage of this opportunity.”
