Liverpool are ready to offer their 32-year-old defender Joel Matip a new contract if he is willing to settle for a reserve role. According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool want to keep Joel Matip in their ranks for a few more years and are ready to offer him a new contract. But only if the 32-year-old is willing to accept a secondary role at the club.

Matip came through the ranks of FC Schalke and made quite a name for himself playing in their first team. In the summer of 2016, he decided to join German club Liverpool on a free transfer after his contract expired. Since joining the Reds, he has helped them win numerous championships and made a total of 192 appearances. He was involved in scoring up to 17 goals. Initially an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s first team, the 32-year-old has recently fallen down the pecking order.

Last season, he made just 21 appearances in all competitions. The Cameroon international is currently their fourth choice at centre-back. However, with his contract set to expire next summer, Klopp is keen to extend his stay at the club.

Although the 32-year-old is not a vital part of their first-team squad, the German boss believes his experience can help their cause. As a result, the club is ready to offer him a new contract. They want Matip to extend his stay, but only if the player is willing to take a secondary role at the club.

He is unlikely to become first choice at centre-back and if he is content to come on as a substitute, the Merseyside club are prepared to offer him a few more years at the club. At the end of the contract, he is free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club starting in January. As a result, Liverpool will try to resolve the situation in the coming months.

The club has started negotiations with the representatives of the 32-year-old man about a new contract. Negotiations are currently at an early stage. And it will be interesting to see if Matip is ready to support the club. He has already played in four matches this season. Since Virgil van Dijk’s suspension, he has started three of those matches.
