INTERVIEW | Phil Parkinson after Crewe Alexandra (EFL Trophy)

PREVIEW | Crewe Alexandra – Wrexham AFC

Phil Parkinson’s side make the short trip to the Mornflake Stadium for the EFL Trophy. Wrexham AFC will be looking to secure their place in the last 32 of the EFL Trophy when they make the short trip to local rivals Crewe Alexandra at the Mornflake Stadium.

Ahead of the game, let’s take a look at everything you need to know about our opponents, the Railwaymen.

EYE AGAINST

Lee Bell’s side go into tonight’s match having enjoyed a strong start to the season, having lost just twice in the league so far – leaving them sixth in the Sky Bet League Two table.

After their successful start to the season, Bell was recently named Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month after picking up 11 points from five games in September. Bell’s team also leads the league in scoring, scoring 28 times in 12 games, making it the leading scorer of the season.

Chris Long and Courtney Baker-Richardson lead the way with six and five goals respectively, but Mickey Demetriou and Elliott Nevitt are not far behind with the duo on four.

Despite a strong 2023/24 campaign, the Railways will be looking to bounce back from a 4-2 defeat at Salford at the weekend, which ended a six-match unbeaten run.

Crewe will likely have to get something out of tonight’s game to qualify for the next round of the EFL Trophy, having lost their opener against Port Vale at Vale Park on Thursday, September 5.

LAST TIME: WREXHAM AFC 3-3 CREWE

The sides last met less than a fortnight ago when Crewe traveled to STōK Cae Ras for a thrilling 3-3 draw against Phil Parkinson’s side. Wrexham started slowly and scored when Mickey Demetriou headed home from a corner to break the deadlock in North Wales.

Things got worse when Ryan Barnett was red-carded for a late challenge on Shilow Tracey in the 36th minute, reducing the Red Dragons to ten men.

Paul Mullin equalized after 40 minutes with a superb header for his first league goal of the season.

Chris Long scored from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to put Crewe back in front – but just eight minutes later Mullin scored again for Wrexham to equalise.

Crewe restored their lead in the 65th minute when Tracey got on the back of Rio Adebise and fired into the empty net. Just as all seemed lost, Jacob Mendy’s moment of composure produced the perfect shot into the box when his right-wing cross found Fletcher at the back post.

Steven Fletcher was the first to react after hitting the post early in the match and pounced on Harvey Davies for his first Wrexham goal in the 96th minute, sending the home fans into jubilation.
