Tennis news Stefanos Tsitsipas reveals he would “trade” a Grand Slam title for No.1

Follow Tennishead Stefanos Tsitsipas has admitted he would rather become world number one than win a major when the Greek meets the former two-time Grand Slam finalist.

Tsitsipas is at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, Mexico this week and spoke to El Universal Deportes about his desire to become the best player in the world. “I’m changing [Grand Slam] for No. 1,” the 24-year-old revealed.

“It’s definitely something special, it’s a sign that you’ve reached the maximum in your career and I like that you can maximize everything.

So one day I can tell my grandchildren that I’m number one. Tsitsipas is currently ranked 5th in the world and is 4,375 points behind current number one Carlos Alcaraz.

The Greek has been ranked as high as No. 3 in the world in the past and has opportunities to climb to the top at both the Australian Open and the US Open, but he hasn’t taken advantage of it.

Tsitsipas is the top seed at the Los Cabos

Open and has been seen with former

coach Mark Philippoussis,

with whom he split earlier in May. He is

also coached by his father Apostolos, and

he explained the end of the employment

relationship: “Two coaches on the field

are never easy.”

Tsitsipas continued: “I know they are

ready to help and do their best and take

care of me, but sometimes it can be quite

intense when two coaches share their

opinions.

“I’m at a point in my life where I need one

coach to give me all the information,

analysis and all the things I’m looking for

to improve my game. I think less is

more.”

partnership between Stefanos Tsitsipas

and Mark Philippoussis is not over yet as

the Greek looks forward to his semi-final

clash with Borna Coric.
