Contract Extensions for Max Domi and $5.5M Forward in Jeopardy as Leafs Struggle with Key Terms, Friedman Says
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a significant hurdle in their efforts to secure contract extensions for forward Max Domi and another key player earning $5.5 million per season, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
In his latest report, Friedman highlights that negotiations have hit a snag, putting both deals in jeopardy as the team struggles to navigate the complexities of its salary cap situation and other key terms in the contracts.
Domi, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Leafs ahead of the 2023-24 season, has been a key piece for Toronto’s revamped forward group. After a solid stint with the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars, Domi joined the Leafs with the expectation of adding depth and offensive firepower. However, the team’s ability to extend him beyond this season has now come into question, with financial constraints and long-term planning appearing to be central to the impasse.
Friedman’s report suggests that the Maple Leafs are also in a delicate situation regarding another forward on the roster earning $5.5 million per season, widely believed to be William Nylander. Nylander, a core member of the Leafs’ offensive lineup, is in the final year of his current contract and has been one of the team’s most productive players in recent seasons. Extending Nylander, however, has proven to be a complicated process for Toronto’s front office, as his strong play has likely increased his market value beyond what the Leafs might be able to afford under the salary cap.
The Maple Leafs’ cap situation has been a significant challenge for the organization, with the team already heavily invested in high-profile contracts for stars like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares.
