and#039;and#039;is just disappointed and#039; – Ange Postecoglou admits replacing injured player won’t be easy – Spurs Web – Tottenham Hotspur Football News
Ange Postecoglou has admitted that replacing James Maddison with a similar option would be impossible, suggesting that the system needs to be tweaked to compensate for the attacking midfielder’s creativity.
Maddison is arguably the best player in the Premier League so far this season, and the 26-year-old is the one who has been in Tottenham’s attacking unit.
As well as his influence in the final third of the England squad, Spurs will also miss his leadership skills now that it has been confirmed that the former Leicester City man will be out until next year.
James Maddison’s injury is a blow for Spurs
Postecoglou has revealed that he is transforming the overall structure of the side to cope without James Maddison.
Asked about replacing the midfielder, the Australian told Football.London: “I don’t think you can replace him, but the system adapts to individuals because we haven’t built a system for Madders. We had a system and Madders agreed that he would bring his qualities to it.
– Whoever we replace him is not the same player, he brings different qualities to it, but it does not change our general structure or intentions in how we want to play. There are only a few differences here because the player is different.
“I’m just disappointed for Madders. He’s had an incredible season, he’s probably been one of the best players in the competition and he’s looking forward to pushing himself harder. I’m disappointed for him that it was cut.
Not only do Tottenham have to deal without Maddison, they also have a completely revamped back four, Micky van de Ven’s back injury and the suspensions of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie.
Asked if Guglielmo Vicario should play more in goal than in the second half against Chelsea now that Spurs don’t have Van de Ven’s recovery pace to save them, Postscoglou said: “Not necessarily.
Obviously we talked about it last game where we thought Vic. probably should have played in the second half to be more aggressive in our position, which we tried to do.
“So he started in a higher position than usual, but 11v11 I don’t expect him to have too much difference from what he has done so far.
He has the ability to do that and that was
one of my draws because it becomes
important when you want to be aggressive
on your line, so you have a goalie who
doesn’t hesitate to get out of it.
“We talked about it at half-time that we felt
we wanted to be aggressive in our line and
knowing how Chelsea set up, there’s a good
chance he’ll have to be ready for that.
“I thought he was outstanding Monday
night. I thought he was outstanding, not only
with his goaltending, but his whole
mentality where he was a one-man defense
at times with whatever came his way. I
thought he was outstanding.”

For Giovani Lo Celso, this is now a great
opportunity to show what he can do and
save his Tottenham career. While Ange says
there is no replacement like Maddison, the
reality is that the eight/ten role in his 4-3-3
system is probably ideal for a player with Lo
Celso’s qualities.
