Done Deal: Chicago Bulls ownership move fast to complete $215M Star trade before 48hours….
The Bulls re-signed fan favorite Ayo Dosunmu to a long-term deal by Austin Carroll 4 months ago After receiving news of their second free agent signing of the day,
the Chicago Bulls seem determined to prepare their roster for the 2023-24 campaign as quickly as possible. While the newest addition to the roster, Onuralp Bitim,
is an unknown quantity to all but the most die-hard basketball fans, I’m sure many Bulls fans (myself included) rejoiced when the news of Ayo Dosunmu’s return to Chicago broke announced 38 overall in 2021.
Ayo’s story as a hometown underdog is what movies are made of, it’s hard not to root for the guy…at least when he’s playing well.
Although he took a step back in his second season, his potential as an elite player earned him All-Rookie second-team honors in 2021 and showed he can be a valuable asset for the Bulls.
Dosunmu agreed to a new three-year contract with Chicago for $21 million, a relatively small amount for a quality player in today’s NBA.
The move puts the Bulls under the luxury tax threshold, prompting speculation about Jerry Reinsdorf’s willingness to invest in building a winning team.
Ayo Dosunmu will remain with the Bulls for years to come after signing a $21 million contract extension.
Despite being a second round draft pick,
injuries and a lack of depth have forced
Dosunmu to start an incredible 58% of all
the games he has played thus far.
This is a big reason why I think the
fanbase may have judged him too harshly
at times, he was just being asked to play a
role he shouldn’t be in.
Then his defense, game management and
overall game IQ gave the front office and
fans a lot of hope for the future. While
Dosunmu will be back with the Bulls for
the next three years, that doesn’t mean
he’s guaranteed significant playing time.
After Chicago opted to sign Jevon Carter
and bring Coby White back to a new long-
term deal, the road to minutes looks
scarier than ever. Ayo will be the fifth
guard in the Bulls circle as he focuses on
personal development and is very solid
injury insurance.
While he won’t be sitting on the Bulls’
depth chart right out of the gate, I still
think this was a quality move by the front
office. If Ayo can’t make significant
improvements, it’s hardly the
blockbuster we care about.
However, if he can find consistent hitting
and become the player I believe he will
be, his contract could easily become a
valuable steal.
Before we start patting ourselves on the
back here, Dosunmu needs to take that
next step. Until then, consider me
cautiously optimistic about this deal.
