The Detroit Lions made a new roster move on August 5th to add depth to their wide receiver depth.

The Lions announced before practice that they signed wide receiver Avery Davis.

To make room for Davis on the roster, Detroit waived winger Zach Morton. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press first reported on August 4 that Detroit also signed cornerback Tae Hayes, a deal the team announced the next day.

Justin Rogers of the Detroit News reported that Davis was a two-time quarterback in high school. He also played cornerback at Notre Dame, but was converted to wide receiver.

According to Rogers, he has been “on the fringes of the charts for the last three years”. Lions sign versatile wide receiver, release undrafted rookie Heavy.com A tough sport Hard on the lions Lions sign versatile wide receiver,

With the arrival of Davis, the Lions have 13 wide receivers on the 90-man roster. Injuries derailed WR Avery Davis’ college career SB Nation’s Jeremy Reisman called Davis an “interesting signing” for the Lions.

Davis is an undrafted freshman out of Notre Dame. He posted a pair of 300-yard seasons in 2020 and 2021.

Last season, the Fighting Irish named Davis a team captain and he was expected to be the top slot receiver in the Independent college football program.

But Davis tore his right ACL in practice on August 12 of last year. He suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in November 2021.

These injuries ended his football career. They also made it very unlikely that he would be elected. But Davis now has a shot at an NFL job with the Lions.

From 2018 to 2021, Davis had 66 receptions for 862 yards. He averaged 13.1 yards per reception, which is a pretty solid average for a slot receiver.

He also scored 8 touchdowns. His best statistical season came in 2021 when he had 27 catches for 386 yards and 4 touchdowns in eight games.

This offseason, NFL pundits speculated that Detroit will need more depth at wide receiver through 2023.

The Lions will be without second-year wideout Jameson Williams for the first six games due to a gambling suspension.

But two late-season moves bolstered the Lions’ receiving corps. In addition to acquiring Davis, Detroit traded former New York Jets second-round pick Denzel Mims. Without Morton,

Detroit’s defensive end will take a hit. But Morton at least had outfielders John Cominsky and Josh Paschal — and maybe others — on the depth chart.

Lions sign CB Tae Hayes Detroit made adding cornerbacks a priority this offseason. The Lions opened free agency by signing cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

With the Hayes deal, the Lions are talking cornerback again. Hayes was a free agent out of Appalachian State in 2019.

He made debut appearances with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins. He also dressed the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots for regular season games.

In 13 NFL games, Hayes recorded 16 combined tackles, 2 passes defensed and 1 fumble recovery.

He’s played 207 defensive snaps and 45 snaps on special teams. Hayes will likely compete with fellow former undrafted free agent defensive back Khalil Dorsey,

along with 2023 undrafted free agent cornerbacks Starling Thomas V and Steven Gilmore, for a roster spot or a place on the Detroit practice squad.
