Adam Johnson, from Minnesota, USA, died after suffering a catastrophic neck injury during a match at the Sheffield Arena.

Witnesses described the crash as horrific and many fans cried when the match was called off. Johnson’s team, the Nottingham Panthers, confirmed his death on Sunday morning.

In a statement, the team said: “The Nottingham Panthers are very sad to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during last night’s game in Sheffield.

“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club, including the players, staff, management and owners, is heartbroken.”

The club described Johnson, “our number 47”, as “not only a great hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with a whole life ahead of him.”

Witnesses described the incident that led to Johnson’s death as a strange confrontation. Guardian reporter Christian Bennett, who was at the game, said: “Two players blindsided each other, just ran into each other.

“The Sheffield player was clearly knocked off his feet and his skate went up and cut [another player’s throat].

I’ve never seen anyone bleed so much. It’s one of the darkest things I’ve ever seen at a sporting event.” Johnson got back up and tried to slide before collapsing after about three steps.

About 8,000 people watched, some of them children. “It was an absolute family atmosphere … everyone was crying,” said Bennett, editor-in-chief of visual journalism at The Guardian.

“They told everyone they were leaving but would stay in their cars for the ambulance to arrive and put screens around him. “When I went to the gym, the kids were screaming uncontrollably because blood was coming from his neck.

It was a really freak accident.” A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called to the Sheffield Arena at 8.21pm.

after an incident on the ice. Two ambulances and a paramedic attended the scene and one person was transported to the scene and taken to hospital.

The Elite Hockey League said it was “saddened” by Johnson’s death following the accident. In light of the “deeply shocking” news, all games on Sunday October 29 have been postponed, it said.

Greetings to you dear Nigerian reader! When former Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha delivered his New Year’s message in 1967, he pulled a string known as a “verb bomb.”

“This year will be more difficult than last year,” he announced. “However, it will be easier than next year.” I mean… On the other hand, thanks for not covering it, Enver.

On the other hand: way to kill the party buzz, monster! I don’t want to kill the mood (or other dissenters) by reminding you of the news year you just experienced, or warning you about the news year to come.

It’s not big, it’s not smart, and it’s definitely not seasonal. But frankly, our reporting seems especially necessary in the dark. If you can, support the Guardian with just $2 a month to keep it open to everyone.

I can’t tell you how much that would be appreciated. A free press is needed now more than ever—and sometimes more than ever.
