Kavanagh was in charge of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester
City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The 38-year-old official has already
overseen two Liverpool matches this season. The Reds beat West Ham United
and Nottingham Forestand#039 who visit Anfield. In total, Kavanagh showed just
17 yellow cards in 15 games for Liverpool. However, his time with VAR
will be least remembered by Reds supporters when he failed to send Harry
Kane off for Andy Robertson in a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in December
2021. In the same match, Robertson was later sent off for a challenge on Emerson
Royal, which was upgraded after on-field
referee Paul Tierney sought advice from Kavanagh and the VAR team. “That red
card you can give, but it was proof that VAR was there today because before we
thought he might not be in his office,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said of the
decision to send Robertson off. “I think we all agree that Harry Kane should
have seen the red card and he didn’t.”
Greater Manchester-born Kavanagh will be joined on Saturday by assistants
Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan and fourth official Thomas Bramall. Stuart
Atwell and Tim Wood are in position in Stockley Park’s VAR team. Victory at the
Etihad takes Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table. They are currently
one point behind leaders and defending champions City.
