Rashford aims to break Wayne Rooney’s scoring record for Manchester United.
Marcus Rashford admitted he’s aiming for Wayne Rooney’s goal total at Manchester United, and the forward is
getting closer to it thanks to a strong 2022–23 season.
The 25-year-old scored 123 goals for the team and was in good form for the Red Devils previous season, scoring 30
goals across all competitions.
With Rooney at the top of the list, having scored 253 goals for the club in 559 appearances, Rashford sits 11th on the
club’s all-time scoring list, three goals behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 10th.
The international for England has acknowledged that he has spoken to Rooney about his goal total and is hoping that
he will get the chance to surpass it.
Rashford said to Gary Neville on The Overlap, “You never know what’s going to happen. I’ve already talked to Wazza
[Rooney] about it because I’m all about scoring goals and trying to provide assists, so there’s definitely a chance that
might happen.
“He wants me to carry it out. He claimed that since I’ve spent my entire life at the club, doing it would be beneficial
for me. I hope I have the chance to try to make that happen.
Rashford also discussed the ambition of Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag to bring home trophies throughout his
tenure at the organization, with the Dutchman presenting the EFL Cup trophy last season.
“When he entered, I didn’t hear him mention entering, in the top four once, he just wanted to win trophies.
“If you’ve got that mentality, I’ve always been around people that have that mentality,” he added.
He emphasized that any cup trophy counts, whether we are competing for the Europa League or the Premier League.
He sought to be the winner in everything.
“Listen, players, we do everything necessary. We obviously fell short in the Europa League, and I believe there was a
time when we weren’t defending as well and weren’t scoring as many goals as we had been. Therefore, that’s
something I’ll want to fix for this season.
“It’s not always easy to bounce back, but here, if we had a period following a poor outcome, he [Erik] would restore
our confidence.
He would occasionally tell us, “Listen, you’re down, but if you weren’t, you wouldn’t be here. I’m not one to need that
all the time. But there are times after games like that, just a reminder like this next game, you’re going to do it and he
always give us that full confidence and support.”
