Manchester United 0-1 Crystal Palace – Verdict

Erik ten Hag has been dealt a hammer blow as he fights for his Manchester United future.

Fans’ displeasure intensified at Old Trafford on Saturday as United beat Crystal Palace 1-0. It was United’s fifth defeat in all competitions this season and confirmed the club’s worst league start in 34 years.

The anger among supporters can be gauged by the fact that #TenHagOut was trending on social media after the game, less than 18 months after the Dutchman took charge at Old Trafford. And it comes at the start of a crucial week for the Red Devils, who must win their Champions League tie with Galatasaray on Tuesday before the visit of Brentford four days later. However, the manager faces a major disruption to his squad with long-term and new signings Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount sidelined by Luke Shaw. Jadon Sancho and Antony are also unavailable due to off-field issues.

Compounding matters now is news that key defender Lisandro Martinez faces a second operation on a metatarsal problem that ruled him out for the latter stages of last season. After limping off against Arsenal this month, the Argentine returned to play against Brighton and Bayern Munich, but tests this week confirmed a recurrence.

He could now be sidelined for up to three months, leaving Ten Hag without a headliner for the 2022/23 season. Indeed, club legend Paul Scholes underlined his importance last year, saying United could not afford to be without him. “Although the four-member spine will help them now,” he said. “Martinez’s departure could be a concern in the future.”

His sentiment was echoed by former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand, who claimed on FIVE that the World Cup winner was the best defender in the Premier League: “At the moment I don’t think he’s coming in form. I think he is. dominant, aggressive, leader, communicates well, shows character, he’s there for the big moments.”

Before the Palace game, Ten Hag admitted that 25-year-old Martinez has been sidelined this season with the problem: “It’s very sad (the news about the operation) for him and the team because he wasn’t 100% fit. It was big difference in the last of Licha Martinez in the games and Licha Martinez that we saw here in the first season.”

Martinez arrived from Ajax last summer for a fee of £50m. His height and physicality in the Premier League were initially questioned by the likes of Jamie Carragher, but he became a key figure in Ten Hag’s start in the League Cup Final win over Newcastle.
