Mikel Arteta points out one thing Arsenal missed against Tottenham

Mikel Arteta admitted his side lacked the edge to challenge rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

Son Heung-min’s struggles allowed Spurs to leave the Emirates Stadium with a deserved 2-2 draw, retaining Ange Postecoglou as an unbeaten Premier League manager.

Arsenal also remain unbeaten, having won four and drawn two of their opening six games, but the Gunners were frustrated by their inability to hold on twice with a Cristian Romero own goal and a Bukayo Saka penalty.

Jorginho, a half-time substitute for the injured Declan Rice, was directly responsible for Spurs’ second goal and Gabriel Jesus was guilty of some glaring passing in the first half after robbing James Maddison on the edge of his own penalty area. .

Those points in the game and Arsenal’s failure to demolish Spurs for the third time made Arteta admit after the game that his side lacked the quality to collect all three points. “We are very disappointed that the three points were not earned, that’s for sure. Especially when we go ahead twice in a game and you have a chance to win it,” said the Spaniard.

“Especially the moments when we won. We controlled the game, we could have made it 2-0 with Gabi and then you win and you have to bounce back. We won and won, but it’s a shame that the minute you concede to the other. Gabriel Jesus

“I think it emotionally affected the team a lot and we needed to make more passes in the final third. It became a transition game to risk playing against. We pressed for the last 15-20 minutes but we lacked quality in the last pass to win the game.”

Arteta continued to praise the character and drive of his players, but ultimately admitted that his squad lacked the necessary tools to improve the Spurs squad.

“In big games, both boxes are so important

and you have to throw those chances away.

We didn’t do that and we had those

mistakes, we admit it,” he continued. “It’s

difficult to win then, but the effort, energy

and attitude of the lads was phenomenal.

Today we lacked a certain composure on the

ball to be more dominant, to finish and

bring the structure to the game that we

needed against good Spurs. side.”
