reading PHILADELPHIA — Veteran safety Erik Harris is making his 49ers debut less than a week after joining the organization.
On Saturday, the 49ers picked up Harris and wide receiver Chris Conley from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad for their most important game on Sunday in Week 13.
Harris signed with the 49ers’ practice squad on Tuesday after injuries to safeties Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum in back-to-back games.
Hufanga is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in the 49ers’ Week 11 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Odum underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn biceps muscle he suffered in a special teams game against Seattle on Thanksgiving Sunday. Odumandi has an expected recovery time of two months and believes he can return to action in the playoffs.
Harris is a seven-year NFL veteran who played in 91 games (43 starts) with the New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons.
He will likely play a major role on special teams against the Eagles serving as a backup to starters Tashaun Gipson and Ji’Ayir Brown. Conley’s game activation could be a sign that the 49ers don’t think Ray-Ray McCloud is available.
McCloud is questionable with a rib injury. If McCloud is unable to play, the 49ers are expected to turn to rookie Ronnie Bell to handle kicks and punt returns.

Conley has been cut from the practice
squad this season. He saw action this
season in games against the New York
Giants and Minnesota Vikings, had 10
tackles on offense and saw action in
seven games on special teams.
In his nine-year career, Conley has 217
receptions, 2,853 yards and 15
touchdowns. He began his NFL career
with the Kansas City Chiefs for four
seasons, catching 104 passes.
He had 87 receptions during two seasons
with the Jacksonville Jaguars and also had
short stints with the Houston Texans and
Tennessee Titans.
Conley’s third promotion from the
practice squad means that if the 49ers
need him for another game, they will
have to write him on the 53-man roster.
