🎥 Mathieu van der Poel already underwent surgery the same night after leaving the Tour: “Now the road to recovery begins”

Mathieu van der Poel has confirmed that he underwent surgery on his injured wrist just hours after abandoning the Tour de France. The Alpecin-Deceuninck star crashed heavily on a descent, fracturing his scaphoid and forcing an early exit from the race.

“Now the road to recovery begins,” van der Poel shared on social media, posting a photo from his hospital bed with a bandaged hand and a thumbs-up gesture. He thanked fans for their support and praised the medical team who operated on him so quickly.

The team issued a statement confirming the successful procedure, adding that they expect van der Poel to begin rehabilitation immediately with the goal of returning to racing later this season. “It’s never easy to leave the Tour like this, but the priority is healing properly so he can come back strong,” the team said.

Van der Poel’s crash was a blow for both his personal ambitions and the team’s strategy in the race, but they remain optimistic about his recovery. “He’s one of the toughest riders in the peloton,” the team doctor noted. “We know he’ll do everything he can to be back as soon as possible.”
