Tadej Pogačar Takes Tour de France Lead as Remco Evenepoel Wins Time Trial

Remco Evenepoel delivered a commanding performance to win Stage 5 of the 2025 Tour de France, an individual time trial from Caen to Bayeux. The Belgian time trial world champion completed the 33-kilometre course in 36 minutes and 42 seconds, securing his first-ever stage win in the Tour.

Despite finishing 16 seconds behind Evenepoel, Tadej Pogačar did enough to claim the yellow jersey and take the overall race lead. The Slovenian, riding for UAE Team Emirates, now leads Evenepoel by 42 seconds in the general classification.

“It’s always special to wear yellow,” Pogačar said after the stage. “I felt really good and gave everything. Remco was simply faster today, but I’m happy with my ride.”

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard struggled to keep pace, finishing over a minute behind Evenepoel. The result pushed him down the standings and leaves him trailing Pogačar by more than a minute heading into the upcoming mountain stages.

The battle for the yellow jersey is now firmly set between Pogačar and Evenepoel, as the Tour continues into more challenging terrain.
