Paul Finebaum has never been shy about sharing his opinions on Alabama football, and his latest criticism of head coach Kalen DeBoer is likely to generate plenty of discussion among Crimson Tide fans. Finebaum’s comments come at a time when expectations surrounding Alabama remain enormous, with every decision made by DeBoer being closely examined.
There is no question that DeBoer inherited one of the most demanding jobs in college football. Replacing Nick Saban was always going to be difficult, and the pressure became even greater because Alabama had built a standard of championship contention over multiple decades.
Finebaum’s criticism highlights the concerns that have followed DeBoer since his arrival in Tuscaloosa. Questions about consistency, expectations and whether Alabama can return to the very top of the sport remain part of the conversation. However, there is one crucial reality that can sometimes get overlooked: DeBoer is attempting to build his own era at Alabama rather than simply recreate Saban’s.
That distinction matters.
Saban’s tenure established an almost impossible standard. Alabama regularly competed for national championships, produced elite NFL talent and dominated the Southeastern Conference. Comparing every DeBoer season directly with Saban’s best years risks ignoring how difficult it is for any coach to maintain that level of success.
DeBoer also arrived during a period of significant change across college football. The transfer portal, expanded playoff format, conference realignment and evolving rules surrounding player compensation have dramatically changed how programs operate. Coaches are no longer simply developing recruiting classes and preparing for a traditional season. They are managing rosters in an increasingly competitive environment.
That makes patience an important part of evaluating DeBoer.
Alabama fans understandably want immediate results. The Crimson Tide is one of college football’s most recognizable programs, and expectations will never be modest. Still, judging DeBoer solely against the extraordinary standard established by Saban could make it difficult to properly evaluate the progress of the current program.
One area that could ultimately determine DeBoer’s success is his ability to establish an identity that belongs to him. He does not need to become another Saban. Instead, Alabama needs DeBoer to develop a sustainable system capable of competing with the strongest programs in the country.
That process requires recruiting, player development, roster management and consistency. It also requires the support of the Alabama administration, coaching staff and fan base.
Finebaum’s criticism is therefore part of a larger conversation about expectations in Tuscaloosa. The scrutiny is understandable, but Alabama’s reality is more complicated than simply asking whether DeBoer has matched Saban.
The Crimson Tide is entering a new chapter, and new chapters rarely look exactly like the ones before them.
Ultimately, DeBoer will be judged by wins, championships and sustained success. But before that judgment arrives, Alabama fans may need to recognize the challenge of building something new while carrying the weight of one of the greatest coaching legacies in college football history.
