Will Howard enters the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2026 training camp with plenty to prove as he fights to secure his place on the team’s final roster. The young quarterback has an opportunity to establish himself in Pittsburgh, but the competition around him means his position is far from guaranteed.
The Steelers’ quarterback room currently features Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Drew Allar and Howard. While Rodgers remains the veteran centerpiece, the battle behind him has become one of the more interesting storylines of training camp. Howard and Rudolph, in particular, are competing for an important role, while rookie Drew Allar is also part of Pittsburgh’s long-term quarterback plans.
Howard’s biggest advantage is his youth and potential. He still has two years remaining on his rookie contract, giving Pittsburgh a reason to continue developing him rather than immediately moving on. His future upside could ultimately make him a more appealing option than a veteran such as Rudolph.
However, potential alone will not be enough.
Howard missed his entire preseason as a rookie after suffering a hand injury during training camp. He eventually returned to practice in October and was activated to the 53-man roster in November, but he never appeared in a regular-season game. That limited experience makes this year especially important for the former college standout.
Now, Howard has the opportunity he did not get last season: meaningful preseason reps and a chance to show what he can do in game situations.
The competition with Rudolph could be particularly important. Rudolph brings experience and familiarity with Pittsburgh, while Howard offers the Steelers a younger developmental option. The team must determine which quarterback gives them the best combination of reliability now and potential for the future.
For Howard, the objective is simple. He needs to show that he can operate confidently within new head coach Mike McCarthy’s system, make accurate throws, protect the football and demonstrate enough consistency to convince the coaching staff that he deserves a roster spot.
That opportunity could become even more important during the preseason. With the Steelers preparing for their first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on August 13, Howard will have opportunities to make his case when the competition moves from practice to actual game action.
There are reasons for optimism. A recent Steelers roster projection included Howard among the team’s three quarterbacks, alongside Rodgers and Allar. That suggests his chances of making the team remain very real despite the competition.
Still, nothing is guaranteed.
Howard’s Steelers future could ultimately come down to how much progress he shows throughout camp and preseason. If he performs well, Pittsburgh may view him as a valuable young quarterback worth continuing to develop. If he struggles, Rudolph’s experience could become a major factor in the roster decision.
For now, Howard remains firmly in the fight. His Steelers future may be uncertain, but the path to securing his roster spot is still within reach. The coming weeks could determine whether he takes another step forward in Pittsburgh or finds himself facing an unexpected change in his NFL journey.
