Chasing Georgia: Alabama, LSU now trying to catch up to 2-time …

The balance of power in the SEC has shifted, and Alabama and LSU are now looking up at a Georgia program that has established itself as the conference’s standard.

Georgia’s back-to-back national championships in the 2021 and 2022 seasons changed the conversation around SEC football. The Bulldogs proved they could not only compete with Alabama but also replace the Crimson Tide as the league’s premier program. Since then, every major SEC contender has faced the same challenge: How do you catch Georgia?

Alabama remains one of the most obvious answers. Under Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide built an unprecedented modern dynasty, winning six national championships between 2009 and 2020. Alabama’s recruiting machine, depth and championship expectations remain among the strongest in college football. Even with Saban’s retirement, the program has the resources and talent to remain in the national championship conversation.

LSU represents another serious challenger. The Tigers have already shown that they can build a championship-caliber roster, most notably during their 2019 national title run. Their location in Louisiana gives them access to outstanding regional talent, while their brand and resources allow them to recruit nationally.

The challenge for both programs is consistency.

Georgia has demonstrated what sustained excellence looks like. The Bulldogs have developed an identity built around elite recruiting, physical defense, strong line play and depth across the roster. Kirby Smart has also created a culture in which competing for championships is treated as the expectation rather than the exception.

For Alabama and LSU, catching Georgia will require more than producing one great season. They need to consistently win recruiting battles, develop players and navigate the increasingly difficult SEC schedule.

The expanded College Football Playoff has also made the race more complicated. Teams no longer need to be perfect to reach the postseason, but they must be strong enough to survive a long schedule and then win multiple playoff games. That puts an even greater premium on depth.

Alabama has the advantage of championship experience and a national recruiting footprint. LSU has the advantage of being one of the SEC’s most talented recruiting grounds. Both programs have the ingredients necessary to challenge Georgia, but turning potential into sustained dominance remains the difficult part.

Georgia, meanwhile, has little reason to surrender its position. The Bulldogs continue to recruit at an elite level and have built one of the deepest programs in the country.

The SEC has never lacked contenders, but the current landscape makes the chase particularly compelling. Alabama wants to restore the dominance that defined the Saban era. LSU wants to return to the championship heights it reached in 2019. Georgia wants to remain the team everyone else is chasing.

For now, the Bulldogs hold the target.

The question for Alabama and LSU is whether they can close the gap before Georgia builds an even larger lead.
