The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an important point in training camp, and Week 2 has provided plenty of clues about which players are making the strongest impressions under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

With practices becoming more competitive and the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers approaching, every rep matters. Some Steelers are building momentum and strengthening their roster chances, while others have seen their stock move in the opposite direction.
Here are three players whose stock is rising and three who need a strong response in the coming practices.
Stock Rising: Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard continues to look like one of the most intriguing young pieces in Pittsburgh’s revamped offense. The second-round pick from Alabama entered camp with plenty of expectations after showing promise during the offseason program.
Bernard’s versatility could be particularly valuable. He has the ability to work from different spots in the formation, giving the Steelers another weapon for an offense that is expected to look different under McCarthy.
The Steelers selected Bernard 47th overall and signed him to a four-year contract, showing how much they value his potential.
Stock Rising: Drew Allar
The Steelers’ rookie quarterback has also generated plenty of interest during camp. Drew Allar was selected 76th overall and brings impressive size and arm talent to a quarterback room led by veteran Aaron Rodgers.
Allar isn’t expected to immediately take over the offense, but his development is worth monitoring. Recent practices have offered encouraging signs, including impressive deep throws and improved confidence.
Every quality rep gives Allar another opportunity to show Pittsburgh’s coaching staff that he can become an important part of the team’s future.
Stock Rising: Jamel Dean
The Steelers’ revamped secondary has also produced some encouraging moments. Veteran cornerback Jamel Dean has made his presence felt during camp, including a pick-six during a recent practice.
With Pittsburgh adding several defensive backs during the offseason, competition for playing time is intense. Dean’s ability to create turnovers could help him establish himself as a key piece of the defense.
Stock Slipping: The Players Fighting for Roster Spots
On the other side of the stock-watch conversation are several players competing for limited opportunities.
Training camp is especially difficult for players on the roster bubble because every missed assignment or quiet practice can affect their chances. Pittsburgh has already continued evaluating the depth of its roster, including bringing several players in for workouts during Week 2.
That means players lower on the depth chart cannot afford to disappear during practices.
The Pressure Is Building
The biggest takeaway from Week 2 is that Pittsburgh’s roster competition is becoming increasingly important. The Steelers have a new coaching staff, a new offensive approach and several new faces competing for roles.
For players trending upward, the challenge now is consistency. For those losing ground, the preseason provides an immediate opportunity to change the conversation.
With Pittsburgh scheduled to face Green Bay on August 13, the next few practices could have a major impact on how the Steelers’ roster picture develops.
Training camp stock can change quickly, but Week 2 has already offered Steelers fans plenty to watch as the team moves closer to the regular season.
