Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver John Metchie III added another major honor to his college football résumé when he was named the winner of the 2021 Jon Cornish Trophy, an award presented annually to the top Canadian player in NCAA football. The announcement came in May 2021 after Metchie helped Alabama complete an undefeated season and win the national championship.
The award was especially meaningful because of Metchie’s Canadian background. Born in Taiwan and raised partly in Ghana before moving to Canada, Metchie developed into one of the most accomplished Canadian players in college football. He attended St. James School in Maryland before ultimately joining Alabama, where he became an important part of coach Nick Saban’s high-powered offense.

Metchie received 94 points in voting conducted by professional scouts and media members across Canada. He narrowly defeated Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga, who finished with 91 points. Interestingly, Ogbongbemiga received nine first-place votes, one more than Metchie, but Metchie’s overall voting total was enough to secure the trophy.
His recognition followed a breakthrough 2020 season at Alabama. After beginning his sophomore campaign as the team’s No. 3 receiver, Metchie saw his role expand significantly following an injury to Jaylen Waddle. He finished that season with 55 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 16.7 yards per catch. Alabama went on to win the College Football Playoff national championship.
Metchie became even more important in 2021. With Waddle gone to the NFL, he stepped into a leading role alongside fellow star receiver Jameson Williams. Metchie finished the regular season with 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns, ranking second in the SEC in receptions and third in receiving yards. His 96 catches were also the third-most in Alabama history for a single season at that point.
Unfortunately, Metchie’s outstanding junior season ended with a knee injury during the SEC Championship Game against Georgia. Before leaving the contest, he caught six passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Alabama ultimately advanced to the College Football Playoff, although Metchie was unable to participate in the postseason.
The Jon Cornish Trophy victory highlighted Metchie’s development from a relatively young contributor into an elite college receiver. It also reflected the growing impact of Canadian football players on the NCAA stage.
Metchie eventually entered the 2022 NFL Draft and was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round. His professional career has included significant adversity, but his college achievements remain an important part of his story. His Jon Cornish Trophy victory stands among the honors that recognized his talent and established him as one of Canada’s premier American football players.
