The Pittsburgh Steelers suddenly have an opportunity for a young wide receiver to make a much bigger impression, and Aaron Rodgers appears to understand exactly what that could mean for Roman Wilson.
With the Steelers preparing for their preseason matchup against the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh’s receiver room has been affected by injuries to two of its most prominent players, DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. Metcalf has been held out of practice, while Pittman is dealing with a leg injury. The situation has opened additional opportunities for younger receivers, including Wilson.
For Wilson, this could be one of the most important stretches of his young career.
The former Michigan standout entered the NFL with considerable expectations after Pittsburgh selected him in the third round of the 2024 draft. His rookie season, however, was disrupted by injuries, limiting his opportunities to establish himself in the offense. He eventually returned to action but finished the season with only one reception.
Now, Wilson has another chance.
Rodgers’ presence makes the opportunity particularly significant. The veteran quarterback has already developed familiarity with Wilson, including connecting with him for his first professional reception in 2025.
The current injuries could force Rodgers and the Steelers to lean more heavily on Wilson during training camp and the preseason. That means every route, catch and blocking assignment becomes an opportunity for him to demonstrate that he can be trusted when the regular season arrives.
The competition is not simply between Wilson and the injuries, either. Pittsburgh has several young receivers fighting for opportunities, including Germie Bernard. With Metcalf and Pittman unavailable, the Steelers have a chance to evaluate which players can consistently produce outside the team’s established stars.
For Rodgers, that evaluation is important because his offense needs reliable targets.
Metcalf gives Pittsburgh a dangerous vertical option, while Pittman provides experience and versatility. If either player misses meaningful time during the regular season, the Steelers will need someone else to step forward. Wilson could potentially fill part of that void if he continues progressing.
The upcoming Packers game could therefore be especially valuable for him. Even if Rodgers does not play extensively, Wilson can use the preseason opportunity to show the coaching staff that he deserves a larger role.
There is also a confidence element.
A young receiver who knows his quarterback believes in him can play faster and more aggressively. Rodgers’ willingness to communicate with and encourage Wilson could help the former Michigan star make the jump from talented prospect to dependable contributor.
The Steelers did not build their 2026 receiver room around one player. They added Pittman to a group that already featured Metcalf, while continuing to develop younger options. That depth is being tested earlier than expected.
For Wilson, though, adversity elsewhere on the depth chart could become an opportunity.
If Metcalf and Pittman are limited, Roman Wilson has a chance to turn increased reps into a permanent role. And having Aaron Rodgers in his corner could make that opportunity even more valuable.
