COMMIT NEWS: USA’s Best Twin Softball Players Announce Commitment to LSU — Reunited in Baton Rouge After Two Years Apart

BATON ROUGE, La. — In a move that has electrified the college softball world, twin sisters Madison and Mackenzie Pickens — widely regarded as the most talented twin duo in the nation — have officially announced their commitment to LSU. The decision ends a two-year separation that saw both players establish themselves as stars in the ACC and SEC, and it signals a major recruiting victory for head coach Beth Torina and her staff.

The twins entered the transfer portal this summer with one shared goal: to play together again. They had intentionally chosen different schools after graduating from Buford High School in Georgia, seeking to build their own identities apart from one another. But after two seasons at Louisville and Ole Miss, respectively, the pull of sisterhood proved too strong to ignore.

The Decision to Reunite

The Pickens sisters made a deliberate choice to separate after high school. “We were always known as the twins,” Mackenzie told LSU Daily. “We wanted to create a name for ourselves separately. We loved playing together for sure, but we also wanted to know what it would be like playing on different teams.”

Madison echoed that sentiment: “We decided to attend different schools so that we could have our own experience. We have always loved playing together but we were often compared. We wanted the opportunity to do our own thing and grow independent from each other.”

That independence came at a cost. The distance was hard on both players and their family, who had to juggle travel schedules to support two daughters in different conferences. When both entered the transfer portal this summer, reuniting became the priority.

“We really wanted to try and end up at the same school again,” Mackenzie said. “Obviously we spent the last two years apart, so we knew how it felt to be apart. It was hard on both us and our families trying to support both of us with travel and their schedules. So yes, it was our goal to end back together. We are each other’s best friends and she is my better half.”

Why LSU?

For Mackenzie, the decision came down to the environment and the people. “The community and environment,” she said. “You can really tell how much LSU values their sports and athletes. The environment is unlike any other SEC school. It seems like they do a great job of supporting and taking care of their athletes both on and off the field.”

Madison pointed to the coaching staff and the family atmosphere. “The whole staff and community were so supportive of the team and truly wanted to do anything to help them succeed,” she said. “It really did feel like such a family and everybody was so welcoming.”

There was also a familiar connection. LSU hitting coach Bryce Neal originally recruited Madison while he was on staff at Louisville, and that pre-existing relationship played a meaningful role in her decision. “Yes it definitely did,” Madison said when asked whether that connection mattered. “The portal can be a stressful process but the coaches were so easy to talk to and I feel like they truly cared for us. I have so much respect for them and I value the strong relationship that we were already able to build.”

Proven Production Arrives in Baton Rouge

The Tigers are not just getting a heartwarming reunion story — they are getting two of the most productive offensive players in the country.

Madison Pickens arrives from Louisville after one of the most dominant seasons in program history. She earned Softball America Second Team All-America honors and was named to the All-ACC First Team after setting Louisville single-season records with a .457 batting average and 74 RBIs. She also led the Cardinals with a .777 slugging percentage, 11 home runs, and 34 extra-base hits. In ACC play, she was even better, pacing the conference with a .494 batting average.

During her two seasons at Louisville, Madison started all 109 games she played, primarily in the outfield while also seeing action behind the plate. She brings a career .373 batting average to Baton Rouge, with 124 hits, 26 doubles, seven triples, 14 home runs, 87 runs scored, and 99 RBIs.

Mackenzie Pickens arrives from Ole Miss, where she was a two-year starter at second base. As a sophomore in 2026, she hit .271 with 11 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a team-high 52 runs scored. She also led the Rebels with 18 hit-by-pitches and posted a .411 on-base percentage. Defensively, she totaled 106 assists, 100 putouts, and turned 14 double plays.

Her freshman season was even more impressive. She started 62 of 63 games and hit .328 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases, helping Ole Miss reach its first-ever Women’s College World Series. Over her two seasons in Oxford, she compiled a .299 career batting average with 105 hits, 90 runs scored, and 80 RBIs.

The Buford Pipeline

The Pickens sisters are part of a growing pipeline from Buford High School in Georgia to LSU. The twins led Buford to back-to-back Class 7A state championships, including a perfect 32-0 season as seniors.

They won’t be the only Buford products in Baton Rouge. Incoming freshman pitcher Addie Rackley, a five-star recruit ranked No. 9 nationally, also starred at Buford and signed with LSU as part of the 2026 class. Rackley grew up looking up to the Pickens twins and is excited to share the field with them again.

“It’s awesome getting to play with a former teammate like Addie again,” Mackenzie said. “This pipeline just shows how great of a program Buford really is.”

For Madison, the connection carries deeper meaning. “It means a lot to us as we have so much love and respect for the Buford program and Coach Adams,” she said. “All the girls have worked so hard to get where they are now, so I’m just really proud to see everyone achieve their dreams.”

Messages to Tiger Nation

Both sisters are already embracing the LSU community and expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

Madison knows exactly what she wants to accomplish in Baton Rouge. “I want to do everything I can to help the team achieve all the goals we put ahead of us. I want to remain focused on the things I can control and help maintain the winning culture here at LSU.” She added, “I am so grateful for the opportunity to put on the purple and gold with my sister, and so ready to be a part of the amazing culture and atmosphere at LSU. Geaux Tigers!”

Mackenzie closed with a heartfelt message to the fanbase: “Thank you for taking a chance on me and my sister. I’m super grateful and blessed to be a part of Tiger Nation. I could not be more excited to be a part of it. Tiger Nation is amazing, and it is a blessing to be able to experience it in the future!”

What It Means for LSU

The additions of Madison and Mackenzie Pickens represent a significant boost for an LSU program that is already stockpiling elite talent. The Tigers’ 2026 signing class ranked No. 3 in the nation, and the 2027 recruiting class currently holds the top spot with commitments from five-star two-way player Sydney Gonglik and several four-star prospects.

For two sisters who chose different roads to create their own identities, the journey has come full circle. They’re together again. And this time, they’re bringing proven production, championship experience, and the winning culture of Buford High School with them to Baton Rouge.
