GOOD NEWS: A Year After Gruesome Injury, DeShon Elliott Could Be Back on the Field Due to Remarkable Recovery and Steelers’ Calculated Patience

PITTSBURGH — Nearly one year to the day after suffering one of the most gruesome leg injuries the NFL has seen in recent memory, Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott is poised to return to game action.

The Steelers activated Elliott from injured reserve on Saturday, clearing the way for the veteran safety to suit up Sunday when Pittsburgh faces the New Orleans Saints in Paris—the first regular-season NFL game ever played in France . The move marks the culmination of a 12-month rehabilitation odyssey that Elliott himself once feared might end his career.

The Injury That Shocked the Football World

On October 26, 2025, during a “Sunday Night Football” matchup against the Green Bay Packers, Elliott’s right leg bent awkwardly beneath him as Packers tight end Tucker Kraft fell into him following a tackle . The injury was immediately catastrophic. Elliott remained on the turf, visibly in agony, before being carted off the field in tears, his head buried in his hands .

The diagnosis was as brutal as the replay: Elliott had hyperextended his knee, causing his hamstring tendon to tear completely off the bone . The injury required surgery to reattach the tendon to his fibula—a procedure that involved drilling a hole through the bone and threading the hamstring back into place .

“I thought my career was over,” Elliott admitted on teammate Cameron Heyward’s podcast earlier this year . “Basically a freak accident, a guy landed on my knee, hyperextending my knee. But the structure of my knee was 100%. I actually tore my hamstring. The hamstring, behind my knee, tore off the bone. So, they had to reattach that” .

The recovery was agonizing. Elliott spent six weeks in a brace and five weeks without bearing any weight on the leg. He described the first two months as “pretty hard,” calling it the worst pain of his career when it came to regaining flexion .

A Setback, Then a Breakthrough

Elliott attacked his rehabilitation with the determination of a player who refused to let his story end that way. He was cleared to return for the start of training camp and even appeared in the second preseason game, signaling that a Week 1 return was within reach .

But the road back is rarely linear. Elliott suffered a setback in late August and was placed on injured reserve, forcing him to miss at least the first four games of the 2026 season . The disappointment was palpable, but the Steelers never wavered in their belief that he would return.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and the medical staff adopted a deliberately cautious approach throughout the process. “There’s no reason to push DeShon Elliott any faster right now,” McCarthy said during training camp. “We’re just being smart there” .

The patience paid off. Elliott returned to practice on October 8, opening a 21-day window for the team to decide whether to activate him or lose him for the season . He progressed steadily, participating fully in practices leading up to the Paris trip.

Why His Return Matters

Elliott’s value to the Steelers extends far beyond the stat sheet. When healthy, he has been a difference-maker for Pittsburgh’s defense. In 19 starts across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he accumulated 146 tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, eight passes defended, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries . The Steelers were so impressed with his play that they tore up his original two-year contract and signed him to a new three-year deal that doubled his salary .

His presence on the field goes beyond numbers. Elliott is regarded as a leader in the locker room and a tone-setter for the defense. “DeShon Elliott is one of our leaders when you look at what he brings to the locker room,” McCarthy said Friday from the team’s hotel in Paris. “Just to watch him fight back from this injury, he’s definitely someone you root for. It’s been a real milestone for him to get to this point” .

Linebacker Patrick Queen, who played with Elliott in Baltimore, echoed that sentiment. “DeShon is a warrior,” Queen said. “His mindset is great. We know the type of player and person he is. It’s exciting to see him bounce back again. We know big things are in store for him” .

What to Expect Sunday

Elliott is expected to handle a significant workload against the Saints, potentially reclaiming his starting safety role from rookie Robert Spears-Jennings . His return comes at a critical juncture for Pittsburgh, which has navigated the first six games of the season without one of its most important defensive pieces.

Whether Elliott takes every snap or eased into action, the significance of the moment is not lost on his teammates or coaches. Cam Heyward, who has witnessed Elliott’s darkest moments and his relentless comeback, summed it up simply: “I’m just thankful he’s back” .

For Elliott, the journey from a cart ride in tears to a starting assignment in Paris is a testament to resilience, modern sports medicine, and a refusal to accept that a gruesome injury would be the final chapter of his career.

The Steelers and Saints kick off Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET.
