Here is how Alabama players celebrated Kalen DeBoer’s birthday after the win: “It was a cold one.”

Alabama Players Give Kalen DeBoer an Ice-Cold Birthday Surprise After Texas A&M Win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kalen DeBoer turned 52 on Saturday, and his Alabama football team gave him exactly what he asked for: a victory. Then they gave him something he didn’t ask for but probably expected anyway—a locker room full of ice water.

Following the Crimson Tide’s 31-20 win over Texas A&M at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Alabama players ambushed their head coach with a Gatorade bath, a celebration that required military-level planning and a little bit of deception. The result left DeBoer soaked, shivering, and smiling.

“It was a cold one,” DeBoer said afterward, still dripping. “I said, you get a win, you can do whatever you want. That was what I said earlier in the week.”

The Mastermind Behind the Mayhem

The operation was orchestrated by safety Bray Hubbard, Alabama’s only healthy captain available for the game. As soon as Hubbard entered the locker room, he sought out Jeff Allen, the team’s senior associate athletic director and head athletic trainer, with an urgent request.

“I said, ‘Jeff, I need an ice bucket full of water, full of ice,'” Hubbard recalled. “He was like, ‘Alright.’ So he gets on his radio or whatever, and he brought me one.”

There was just one problem: the bucket came stocked with towels. Hubbard, ever the perfectionist, wasn’t about to let a stray towel ruin the moment. “I was like, ‘No, y’all gotta take the towels out. We can’t have towels flying on him.'”

A Stealth Operation

With the bucket properly prepared, Hubbard enlisted left tackle Jackson Lloyd to help carry it. The two began walking toward DeBoer, but the coach was staring directly at them. Hubbard feared the element of surprise was slipping away.

“I’m surprised he didn’t see it,” Hubbard said. “Guys started moving, and I was like, ‘No, no, no. Y’all gotta stay. He can’t see this.'”

Desperate times called for desperate measures. Hubbard turned to quarterback Keelon Russell with a critical assignment: create a diversion.

“I was like, ‘Keelon, you’ve gotta go around, and you’ve gotta try to get his attention on the other side where he looks away from us so we can come in,'” Hubbard explained.

The plan worked to perfection. Russell distracted DeBoer just long enough for Hubbard and Lloyd to move into position. The coach turned right into the path of the incoming bucket.

“He was completely shocked,” Hubbard grinned. “He didn’t know. I thought he saw the bucket, but he didn’t see the bucket.”

The Only Gift That Mattered

For DeBoer, the ice bath was a small price to pay for what the win represented. Alabama entered the game riding a two-game losing streak—the program’s first since 2013—and desperately needed a victory to stabilize its season and keep its playoff hopes alive .

“This is really the only birthday gift I wanted,” DeBoer said. “Find a way to get a win tonight. And so, super proud of these guys and, you know, a much-needed bye week that gets us going into these last four games of the regular season.”

The win improved Alabama’s record and gave the Crimson Tide momentum heading into their open week. For a team that had faced mounting criticism after consecutive losses to Georgia and Tennessee, Saturday’s performance—and the postgame celebration—offered a welcome reprieve.

A Team That Fights for Its Coach

The elaborate birthday surprise spoke volumes about the relationship between DeBoer and his players. Hubbard, who has emerged as a vocal leader in the locker room, didn’t need to be asked to organize the celebration. He took it upon himself to ensure his coach’s birthday ended memorably.

After the ice bath, DeBoer addressed the team, expressing gratitude for their effort and acknowledging the significance of the moment. The players, still buzzing from the win and the prank, made sure their coach knew exactly how much they appreciated him.

For DeBoer, the message was clear: his players had his back. They had delivered the victory he wanted most, and then they had doused him in ice water just to prove it.

“It’s a win on his birthday,” Hubbard said. “So we had to get him with the ice bucket.”

As DeBoer dried off and the locker room settled into a quieter celebration, the Alabama head coach could take satisfaction in knowing his team had given him the perfect gift: a win, a reason to smile, and a memory he won’t soon forget. The only thing left to do was enjoy the bye week—and perhaps invest in a warmer change of clothes.
