Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes offered a measured update on running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ ongoing contract situation, making it clear that negotiations remain active but that no agreement is imminent. Holmes struck an optimistic tone without providing a timeline, emphasizing that both sides continue to communicate as Gibbs remains in his training camp “hold-in.”
Gibbs has been present around the team throughout camp but has not participated in full practices while seeking a long-term extension. The dynamic has allowed him to avoid the fines associated with a traditional holdout while still protecting himself as negotiations continue. The Pro Bowl running back is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, though Detroit exercised his fifth-year option earlier this offseason, keeping him under team control through the 2027 season.
Speaking about the situation, Holmes avoided making promises or suggesting that a deal was close. Instead, he stressed that discussions are ongoing and expressed confidence that both the organization and Gibbs value their relationship. His comments reflected patience rather than urgency, a hallmark of how the Lions have handled contract extensions with key players in recent years.
Holmes has consistently emphasized that Detroit wants to retain its young core, and Gibbs certainly fits that category. Since being selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Alabama star has developed into one of the league’s most dynamic offensive weapons. The timing of the negotiations has drawn additional attention following the recent blockbuster extension signed by Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson. That deal reset expectations for elite young running backs and naturally raised questions about what Gibbs’ next contract could look like. Holmes declined to reveal whether Robinson’s deal has changed Detroit’s negotiating strategy, instead reiterating that every contract discussion is unique.
For now, the Lions appear comfortable allowing negotiations to play out. Holmes’ cautious update suggests optimism without guaranteeing an immediate breakthrough, leaving fans to wait for the next step in talks.
