Pittsburgh Steelers fans have plenty to watch during training camp, but the development of the team’s young quarterbacks is already generating plenty of interest. Troy Fautanu recently offered an intriguing assessment of Will Howard and Drew Allar, describing the young quarterbacks as “just sponges” as they continue to learn and adapt.
The comment may have been brief, but it says a lot about the impression Howard and Allar are making around the team.
Quarterbacks entering the NFL face an enormous learning curve. The speed of the game increases, defensive schemes become more complicated, and every practice presents another opportunity to absorb information. For young players, the ability to listen, learn and quickly apply coaching can be just as important as physical talent.
That is where Fautanu’s “sponges” description becomes particularly interesting.
Calling Howard and Allar sponges suggests they are eager to absorb everything around them. Whether it is advice from coaches, conversations with veteran teammates or lessons from each practice rep, the quarterbacks appear willing to take in as much information as possible.
For the Steelers, that mentality could be valuable as the organization evaluates its quarterback room.
Howard arrived in Pittsburgh after a standout college career at Ohio State. The former Buckeye brings experience, confidence and plenty of big-game exposure to a quarterback room that has been under considerable attention. His transition to the professional level, however, will require patience as he adjusts to the demands of the NFL.
Allar, meanwhile, has also drawn significant attention because of his talent and experience at Penn State. His familiarity with high-level competition gives him an intriguing foundation, but the jump to the NFL remains substantial.
Fautanu’s comments provide an inside glimpse into how the quarterbacks are approaching that challenge.
Rather than attempting to arrive with all the answers, Howard and Allar appear focused on learning. That can be an encouraging sign for a young quarterback, particularly during training camp when players are constantly being introduced to new concepts and situations.
It is also worth remembering that positive comments during camp do not automatically translate into success on Sundays. Both quarterbacks still have plenty to prove, and their development will ultimately be measured by what they do on the field.
Still, having teammates notice their willingness to learn is certainly a positive.
Fautanu himself understands the importance of development. As a young offensive lineman, he has gone through his own adjustment to the professional game. His perspective on Howard and Allar therefore carries some added weight, particularly because he sees them competing and learning firsthand.
For Steelers fans, the “sponges” comment offers another reason to keep an eye on both quarterbacks throughout camp.
The preseason will provide more opportunities to evaluate their progress, decision-making and ability to translate what they are learning into game situations. Until then, Fautanu’s assessment paints an encouraging picture of two young quarterbacks eager to soak up every lesson available.
And if that mindset continues to translate onto the field, Howard and Allar could give Steelers fans plenty to be excited about as their NFL journeys begin.
