The New Orleans Saints’ cornerback competition is shaping up to be one of the more interesting battles of training camp, and Jayden Price has a chance to make his presence felt.
Price, who played his college football at North Dakota State, entered the Saints’ organization after spending time with the Arlington Renegades of the UFL. New Orleans signed him to a reserve/future contract in January, giving him another opportunity to compete for a place on the roster.
Although Price is sometimes described as a rookie in discussions surrounding his Saints opportunity, he is actually entering his second NFL season. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound cornerback spent time on New Orleans’ practice squad in 2025 after joining the team during the offseason.
Now, Price has another opportunity to show the coaching staff that he belongs.
The Saints have plenty of competition at cornerback, making every practice important. With changes to the secondary and questions surrounding the depth behind established players, there are opportunities available for players willing to take advantage of them.
Price has already been part of the competition during the offseason. At rookie minicamp, he was among the cornerbacks getting work in the slot, alongside TJ Hall and DaShawn Jones. That versatility could become important as New Orleans evaluates its defensive backs and looks for players capable of handling multiple responsibilities.
His background also gives the Saints reason to continue watching his development. At North Dakota State, Price played five seasons and appeared in 71 games, including 54 starts. He finished his college career with 107 tackles, 17 passes defended, four interceptions, four fumble recoveries, one sack and one forced fumble. His 2023 season was particularly productive, as he recorded career highs in tackles, passes defended and interceptions.
That experience could help Price as he battles for a bigger role.
The Saints do not need him to become a star overnight. What matters most during camp is consistency. Defensive backs must demonstrate that they can communicate, stay disciplined in coverage and make plays when opportunities arrive.
For Price, the challenge is simple: turn every rep into evidence that he deserves to stay.
New Orleans’ decision to bring him back on a reserve/future contract shows that the organization was willing to keep investing in his potential. Now, the next step is for Price to reward that confidence with his performance on the field.
As training camp continues, the cornerback competition will become clearer. Players who consistently make plays and demonstrate reliability will have the best chance of separating themselves from the pack.
Jayden Price has already taken the long route to this opportunity. From North Dakota State to the UFL and then back into the NFL, his journey has required patience and persistence.
Now, with another chance in New Orleans, Price has an opportunity to change his status from a depth option into a legitimate roster contender.
