Can Asante Samuel Jr. Earn a Starting Job for Steelers? – Yahoo Sports

Asante Samuel Jr. enters his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers facing an important opportunity to revive his career and prove that he can still be a dependable starting cornerback in the NFL. After dealing with injuries and inconsistency during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Samuel now has a chance to compete for a significant role in Pittsburgh’s secondary.

Samuel, the son of former Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel, entered the NFL with considerable expectations after being selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He quickly demonstrated the instincts and competitiveness that made him an attractive prospect. His ability to read quarterbacks, anticipate routes and make plays on the football has always been among his strongest traits.

However, staying healthy has been a major challenge. Samuel’s availability has limited his ability to establish himself as a consistent long-term starter. That makes his opportunity with the Steelers particularly important.

Pittsburgh’s cornerback situation provides Samuel with a legitimate path to playing time. The Steelers have traditionally placed a premium on physical, aggressive defensive backs, and Samuel’s style fits that philosophy. He is not afraid to challenge receivers at the line of scrimmage or compete for contested passes.

The biggest question is whether Samuel can remain healthy and consistently execute. Starting jobs in the NFL are rarely won on reputation alone, especially during training camp. Samuel will have to demonstrate that he can handle the Steelers’ defensive responsibilities, communicate effectively with teammates and avoid the mistakes that can put additional pressure on the defense.

One of the biggest advantages Samuel possesses is experience. He has already played meaningful NFL snaps, something that can separate him from younger cornerbacks competing for the same role. Coaches know what they are getting from a player who has faced professional quarterbacks and receivers.

At the same time, Pittsburgh’s coaching staff will likely emphasize competition throughout camp. Samuel cannot assume that his previous NFL experience guarantees him a starting position. He will need to earn defensive coordinator’s trust through practices and preseason opportunities.

The Steelers could also benefit from Samuel’s ball skills. Turnovers can dramatically change games, and Samuel has shown an ability to put himself in position to make interceptions and pass breakups. If he can combine those instincts with improved consistency, he could become a valuable piece of Pittsburgh’s secondary.

Ultimately, Samuel has a realistic chance to earn a starting job, but his health may be the deciding factor. If he stays on the field and performs at the level he has shown at his best, Pittsburgh could have another talented defensive back capable of making an impact.

For Samuel, this is more than simply another roster competition. It is an opportunity to establish himself again as a legitimate NFL starter. If he can seize it, the Steelers could gain a physical, experienced cornerback who brings playmaking ability to an important position.

The path is there. Now Samuel must prove he is ready to take it.
