The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 season with high expectations, but one of their offseason additions has already been identified as a potential trade candidate before the regular season even begins.
New Lions edge rusher Payton Turner has been named by Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox as Detroit’s player to watch on the trade market. The report identifies Turner as a possible candidate for general manager Brad Holmes to move if the right opportunity emerges.

Turner’s inclusion is notable because Detroit signed him during the 2026 offseason with the expectation that he could strengthen its defensive front. The Lions have invested heavily in building a defense capable of competing for a championship, and the edge-rushing group remains particularly important with Aidan Hutchinson leading the way.
The possibility of trading Turner does not necessarily mean the Lions are unhappy with him. Rather, it reflects the realities of roster construction. Detroit has several players competing for snaps along the defensive line, and the front office could eventually determine that another team values Turner more highly than the Lions do.
Turner also brings NFL experience to the roster. The former first-round pick entered the league with the New Orleans Saints and has dealt with injuries during his career. A healthy and productive training camp could increase his value, particularly if another team suffers an injury at edge rusher during the preseason.
For Detroit, the situation will be worth monitoring because Brad Holmes has demonstrated a willingness to make aggressive roster moves when he believes they improve the team. The Lions have already made significant changes this offseason, including trading running back David Montgomery to Houston and acquiring offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.
The Lions also signed several veteran players during free agency, giving the coaching staff considerable competition for roster spots. Detroit’s 2026 additions included running back Isiah Pacheco, wide receiver Greg Dortch, tight end Tyler Conklin, defensive end D.J. Wonnum and Turner among others.
That competition could ultimately make Turner expendable if another defensive lineman emerges during camp. At the same time, the Lions should not rush into a trade simply because an outside analyst has identified him as a candidate.
Detroit needs depth on defense, and injuries can quickly change roster priorities during an NFL season. Keeping an experienced edge defender could become extremely valuable if Hutchinson or another key defender misses time.
There is also a potential benefit to keeping Turner: competition. Having multiple players fighting for defensive snaps can push the entire group to improve, while giving defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard more options when designing pressure packages.
For now, Turner’s status should be viewed as speculation rather than an indication that Detroit is actively shopping him. The Lions have not announced any plans to trade the veteran edge rusher.
Still, his name appearing on a national trade-candidate list is something worth watching as training camp and the preseason progress. If Turner performs well, Detroit could either keep a useful rotational defender or potentially receive an attractive offer from a team looking for help on the edge.
Ultimately, the Lions’ decision will come down to value. If Turner becomes an important part of the defense, keeping him makes sense. If Detroit believes it has enough depth at the position and another team offers meaningful compensation, Holmes could have a difficult but interesting decision to make.
