New York Jets rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. entered training camp with plenty of expectations. After being selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Cooper was expected to quickly become an important part of the team’s revamped offense.
But his path to a starting role may not be as straightforward as initially expected.
The biggest reason is the unexpected emergence of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaiah Williams, who has reportedly been one of the standout players in Jets training camp. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Williams has played his way into consideration for a significantly larger role after impressing coaches and producing during recent practices.
Williams reportedly caught three passes during a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, continuing what has been an impressive stretch for the former Lions receiver. His performance has created legitimate competition for Cooper, particularly for the third wide receiver role.
For Cooper, that represents a notable development.
The Jets selected Cooper 30th overall after his standout career at Indiana. The 22-year-old was viewed as a player capable of contributing immediately, and the organization has spoken positively about his transition to the NFL. The Jets themselves recently highlighted Cooper’s adjustment to the professional game and the challenges that come with learning an NFL offense.
However, Cooper has also experienced some of the normal growing pains associated with being a rookie. Wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson reportedly acknowledged that Cooper has had some “little pitfalls,” while emphasizing that such struggles are part of the process for a first-year player.
That has opened the door for Williams.
The former Lions receiver is taking advantage of his opportunity at exactly the right time. While Cooper has the advantage of draft pedigree and significant organizational investment, NFL coaches ultimately have to put the players they believe are performing best on the field.
That makes the preseason especially important.
Cooper is not necessarily in danger of losing his roster spot. Far from it. As a first-round pick, he is expected to have a significant role in New York’s offense. The bigger question is how quickly he can establish himself among the Jets’ top three receivers.
Garrett Wilson remains the centerpiece of the receiving corps, while the competition behind him is becoming increasingly interesting. Williams’ emergence could give the Jets another reliable option while also forcing Cooper to accelerate his development.
The situation is hardly a disaster for Cooper. In fact, competition could ultimately benefit him. The rookie now has a clear challenge: respond to Williams’ surge and prove he deserves the opportunities that come with being a first-round selection.
With preseason games approaching, the Jets will have plenty of opportunities to evaluate both players.
For now, Williams has momentum, while Cooper has something to prove. The battle could become one of the more intriguing position competitions to watch as the Jets finalize their offensive plans for 2026.
