The New Orleans Saints have received a troubling injury update involving one of the most important players in franchise history. Head coach Kellen Moore acknowledged that veteran defensive end Cam Jordan could potentially miss the beginning of the 2026 regular season after suffering a hamstring injury during training camp.
Jordan’s injury is particularly concerning because Week 1 is now a legitimate question rather than simply a preseason precaution. Moore indicated that the hamstring issue could linger into the regular season, meaning the Saints cannot assume their longtime defensive leader will be available when the games begin to count.
That is a significant development for New Orleans. Jordan remains one of the most recognizable and productive defensive players in Saints history, and his presence goes beyond statistics. The veteran has been a consistent leader in the locker room and an important part of the team’s defensive identity for more than a decade.
The timing makes the situation even more frustrating. Jordan is entering what is expected to be his final NFL season after re-signing with New Orleans in June. He has also demonstrated remarkable durability throughout his career, having missed only two games over his first 15 seasons.
Last season, Jordan showed that he could still make an impact at an advanced stage of his career. He recorded 10.5 sacks in 2025, his seventh career season reaching double digits. That production made him more than just a veteran presence; he remained a legitimate threat off the edge.
Now, the Saints must prepare for the possibility that he will not be available against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.
The good news is that there is still time before the regular-season opener. Jordan suffered the injury during training camp, giving the Saints several weeks to manage his recovery. Hamstring injuries can be unpredictable, however, and rushing a veteran defensive lineman back too quickly could create the risk of aggravating the problem.
For Moore, the priority will likely be getting Jordan healthy rather than forcing him onto the field for the sake of opening day.
The situation also puts greater pressure on the Saints’ defensive depth. If Jordan cannot play, New Orleans will need other edge defenders to absorb his snaps and compensate for the experience, leadership and pass-rushing ability he normally provides.
That could make the preseason especially important for the players competing behind him. Every additional practice and preseason rep could help the Saints determine who is capable of handling an expanded role if Jordan’s absence extends into September.
For Saints fans, the biggest takeaway is simple: Cam Jordan’s Week 1 status is genuinely in doubt. Moore’s comments are not a declaration that Jordan will miss the opener, but they are considerably more concerning than the usual “day-to-day” training-camp language.
