LSU continues to collect preseason recognition ahead of the 2026 college football season, and this time the honor belongs to one of the Tigers’ most important specialists.
LSU punter Grant Chadwick has been named to the 2026 Ray Guy Award Preseason Watchlist, putting him among 21 punters nationally being recognized as early contenders for the award given annually to the nation’s top FBS punter. The Augusta Sports Council announced the list on Aug. 14.
The recognition is significant for Chadwick and LSU because the Ray Guy Award is one of the premier individual honors for specialists in college football. Chadwick is also the first LSU punter to appear on the preseason watchlist since 2023, giving the Tigers another reason to be optimistic about their special teams entering the new season.
For LSU, strong punting could become particularly valuable as the Tigers transition into another season under head coach Lane Kiffin. While much of the preseason attention naturally focuses on quarterbacks, receivers and defensive stars, field position can have an enormous impact in close SEC games.
That’s where Chadwick has an opportunity to make his mark.
A quality punter can change the complexion of a game without necessarily appearing prominently in the box score. Pinning an opponent deep, flipping the field after an LSU drive stalls or producing a long punt at a critical moment can give the defense a major advantage.
Chadwick’s inclusion on the watchlist indicates that the award committee believes he belongs among the nation’s top specialists entering the season.
However, being named to the preseason list is only the beginning.
The Ray Guy Award process will continue throughout the season, with a final watchlist expected in early November. The committee will then select 10 semifinalists in November before three finalists are determined. The eventual winner will be announced during ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards in December.
Importantly, the preseason watchlist isn’t necessarily a requirement for winning the award. The committee can add eligible candidates as the season progresses, meaning Chadwick will have to continue performing at a high level to remain in contention.
He also faces strong competition. The 2026 watchlist includes established specialists such as Troy’s Evan Crenshaw and Baylor’s Palmer Williams, both of whom were finalists for the 2025 Ray Guy Award. Other notable names include Tennessee’s Jackson Ross, Florida State’s Daniel Hughes and Virginia’s Daniel Sparks.
For LSU, though, Chadwick’s inclusion is another encouraging sign heading into fall camp.
The Tigers have plenty of offensive and defensive talent expected to attract national attention this season. Having a punter capable of consistently winning the field-position battle could quietly become one of the team’s biggest advantages.
If Chadwick can turn his preseason recognition into consistent production during the 2026 campaign, LSU could have a legitimate Ray Guy Award contender—and perhaps another opportunity to bring a major individual trophy back to Baton Rouge.
