The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 preseason hoping to evaluate their crowded running back room, but their opening game against the Cincinnati Bengals came with an unfortunate setback.
Head coach Dan Campbell revealed that Kye Robichaux may have suffered a broken bone in his foot, an injury that could keep the young running back sidelined for an extended period. The Lions are still waiting for additional evaluation before determining the full severity, but Campbell’s initial comments were enough to raise concern.

Robichaux had been putting together an impressive training camp and was firmly in the conversation for a roster spot. His physical running style and ability to contribute on special teams made him an intriguing candidate as Detroit sorted through its options behind Jahmyr Gibbs.
That makes the timing of the injury particularly frustrating.
Detroit entered camp with several backs competing for opportunities, including Robichaux, Jacob Saylors, Sione Vaki and Craig Reynolds. With Gibbs expected to handle a major offensive role, the competition behind him was primarily about finding dependable depth and special-teams contributors.
Robichaux had given the Lions plenty of reasons to take notice.
Now, however, the team may have to prepare for the possibility of losing him for a significant portion of the preseason—or potentially longer.
Campbell’s update came alongside more encouraging news about other injured players. Saylors, who also suffered an injury against Cincinnati, is expected to miss only a couple of days of practice because of an ankle issue.
That contrast makes Robichaux’s situation stand out.
The Lions don’t yet have a definitive timeline, and it would be premature to assume the injury is season-ending. Further testing should provide a clearer picture of whether Robichaux has a fracture and how much time he could miss.
Still, the possibility of a broken foot represents a significant blow for a player who was fighting to make an impression at exactly the right time.
Detroit has already dealt with several notable injuries during training camp. Center Cade Mays is expected to miss approximately eight to 10 weeks with a wrist injury, while veteran running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with an MCL sprain.
The Lions therefore cannot afford to lose additional depth.
For Robichaux, the biggest disappointment is that his opportunity had been growing. Preseason games are particularly important for players competing for roster spots, and every snap can influence how coaches evaluate the final roster.
Now his focus shifts from making the team to getting healthy.
The Lions will undoubtedly monitor his condition closely over the coming days. If the injury proves less serious than initially feared, Robichaux could still have an opportunity to return before the regular season. If the fracture is significant, however, Detroit may need to lean more heavily on its other backs and potentially explore additional depth.
For now, Campbell’s message is essentially one of uncertainty—but concern.
**Robichaux had been making a strong case for himself. Unfortunately, his foot injury could now put that opportunity on hold.**
