The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly adding another piece with college football ties to their coaching operation, as Alabama football staff member Torrey Gill is expected to join the organization.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Raiders are hiring Gill as a quality-control coach. The move represents another step in Gill’s rapidly developing coaching career and gives Las Vegas an opportunity to add someone with recent experience inside one of college football’s most demanding programs.
Gill spent the past two seasons at Alabama, working with the Crimson Tide’s wide receivers under assistant wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard. His responsibilities placed him around a position group that has consistently been expected to develop NFL-caliber talent.
Although a quality-control position does not carry the same visibility as a coordinator or position-coach job, it can be an important entry point into the NFL. Quality-control coaches frequently assist with film study, scouting, game preparation and organizational duties. For Gill, the move provides an opportunity to learn the professional game while working inside an NFL environment.
The timing is particularly notable for Alabama. The Crimson Tide are in the middle of preseason preparations under head coach Kalen DeBoer, with the program continuing to reshape its roster and staff after another offseason of significant movement. Alabama’s current staff includes offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and several experienced position coaches.
For the Raiders, Gill becomes part of a coaching structure that has undergone considerable change entering the 2026 season. Las Vegas hired Klint Kubiak as head coach and has continued assembling a staff designed to establish a new direction for the franchise. The Raiders’ announced staff includes offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko, wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni and multiple quality-control assistants.
Gill’s background could make him a valuable addition to that group. Working at Alabama has exposed him to high-level recruiting, player development and preparation, while his work with receivers gives him experience in an area that remains critically important to modern NFL offenses.
The Raiders’ decision also highlights the increasing connection between college and professional football staffs. NFL teams regularly look toward successful college programs for young coaches and analysts who have gained experience in sophisticated offensive and defensive systems.
For Alabama, losing Gill is another reminder of the opportunities available to members of DeBoer’s staff. While his departure is not expected to create a major disruption to the Crimson Tide’s operation, it does remove a staffer who had spent two seasons contributing to the development of Alabama’s receivers.
For Gill, however, the opportunity is significant. Moving to the Raiders gives him his first reported full-time NFL position and a chance to continue building a coaching career at the highest level of football.
The hire may not generate the same headlines as a major coordinator acquisition, but it is another example of the Raiders looking beyond traditional NFL pathways to strengthen their coaching operation.
