Texas A&M has made an early statement in the 2028 recruiting cycle, landing a commitment from one of the nation’s most highly regarded young quarterbacks.
Donald Tabron II, a standout quarterback from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, announced Saturday that he is committing to the Aggies. The decision gives head coach Mike Elko and Texas A&M their second commitment in the 2028 class and adds an elite quarterback to an already impressive recruiting operation.
Tabron entered his commitment as a Top247 four-star prospect and one of the highest-ranked quarterbacks in the country. 247Sports ranks him No. 3 among quarterbacks and No. 49 nationally, while the 247Sports Composite has him even higher at No. 29 overall and No. 3 at quarterback.
The Detroit native stands around 6-foot-4 and weighs close to 190 pounds, giving him the size that college coaches look for in a modern pocket passer. His combination of frame, arm talent and production has made him a priority target for some of the biggest programs in the country.
Texas A&M ultimately won a recruiting battle that included LSU and Oregon as finalists. Tabron had received offers from more than 30 programs, making his decision an important victory for Elko and his coaching staff.
A&M made a strong impression
Tabron’s connection with Texas A&M developed through multiple visits to College Station. During a spring visit, he spent several days around the program, watching practices and experiencing the atmosphere inside the Aggies’ football facilities.
He later spoke highly of the environment created by Elko and his staff, emphasizing the energy around the program and the feeling that players and coaches were committed to getting better.
His relationship with current Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed also helped Texas A&M’s recruitment. Tabron has previously mentioned the bond he developed with Reed and wide receiver Aaron Gregory during his visits.
That relationship could become especially valuable as Tabron continues his development before arriving in College Station.
A major piece for the 2028 class
Tabron joins defensive end Chance Archangel as Texas A&M’s second commitment in the 2028 cycle. Archangel, a Louisiana prospect, became the first member of the class before Tabron’s decision.
Getting a quarterback of Tabron’s caliber this early gives the Aggies a potential centerpiece around which to build the rest of their class.
Quarterback recruiting is particularly important because elite signal-callers often become recruiting magnets themselves. If Tabron continues rising through the national rankings, Texas A&M could potentially use his commitment to attract other highly rated prospects who want to play alongside him.
The Aggies are also coming off a tremendous 2027 recruiting cycle, giving Elko’s program significant momentum on the recruiting trail.
Tabron’s commitment therefore represents more than simply adding another name to the class. It signals that Texas A&M is already competing successfully for elite national talent several years ahead of the 2028 signing period.
There is obviously a long way to go before Tabron arrives on campus, and recruiting rankings can change substantially over two years. But for Texas A&M, landing a highly regarded quarterback this early is exactly the kind of foundation Elko wants.
For now, the Aggies have their quarterback of the future—and another major recruiting win over LSU, Oregon and several other national powers.
