DETROIT — Four referees who officiated Sunday’s dramatic matchup between the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions have reportedly been suspended pending an investigation following complaints surrounding the officiating and several controversial moments that Saints officials believe significantly influenced the outcome.
The Saints suffered a heartbreaking 31–30 overtime defeat to the Lions after mounting a remarkable comeback from a 21-point deficit. New Orleans appeared to have completed one of the biggest comebacks of the week before Detroit ultimately secured the victory in overtime.
According to the allegations, the Saints have raised concerns about multiple officiating decisions throughout the game, arguing that several calls and non-calls potentially affected the flow and outcome of the contest.
The reported investigation is expected to examine several disputed plays, including penalties, missed calls and decisions made during critical moments of the fourth quarter and overtime.
The Saints’ concerns reportedly intensified after the team fought its way back into the game. New Orleans entered the fourth quarter facing a significant deficit but continued to push offensively, eventually tying the game and forcing overtime.
Quarterback Tyler Shough delivered an impressive performance despite the difficult circumstances, throwing for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris Olave was also outstanding, finishing with 10 receptions for 182 yards.
