BREAKING: Anna Minaeva’s LSU Future in Doubt as Controversy Deepens
BATON ROUGE, La. ā The situation surrounding Russian center Anna Minaeva and the LSU women’s basketball program has escalated dramatically, with sources indicating the 17-year-old freshman is reconsidering her commitment to the Tigers amid the fallout from Kate Koval’s departure.
While LSU officially maintains that Minaeva remains enrolled and practicing with the team, the controversy has raised serious questions about whether the young Russian can thrive in Baton Rouge following the firestorm that erupted when Koval left the program.
The Chain of Events
The crisis began on August 14, when LSU announced the signing of Minaeva, a 6-foot-5 center from Moscow who had played professionally for MBA Moscow. Mulkey praised her as a player with “the experience, skill set, and size to make an immediate impact” .
What followed was a sequence of events that has thrust LSU into an international controversy. Koval, a junior from Kyiv whose father serves as a drone operator in the Ukrainian military, left the program just days later . On September 2, Koval publicly confirmed that Minaeva’s signing was the reason for her departure .
In her Instagram statement, Koval wrote: “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes” .
Mulkey’s Controversial Conversation
According to reporting from The Advocate, Mulkey met with Koval before finalizing Minaeva’s signing. In that conversation, the coach suggested the two players could serve as “ambassadors” for peace and potentially even help end the war .
Mulkey told Koval: “I want you to understand I’m not here to ask you to change how you feel about Russia. I’m just here out of respect for your family and out of respect for you to let you know. Because I know how personal it is for you” .
The coach also defended the recruiting decision on competitive grounds: “I cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries” .
Koval reportedly responded to the “ambassadors” suggestion with a simple “I doubt that” .
The Fallout for Minaeva
While Minaeva has not publicly commented on the controversy, the situation has created an undeniably difficult environment for a 17-year-old who left her home country to pursue a basketball career in the United States.
Mulkey acknowledged the challenges Minaeva faces, telling reporters: “It takes tremendous courage to leave home at just 17 years old and travel across the world to pursue a dream” .
At LSU’s first practice of the season on September 21, Minaeva showed flashes of the talent that made her a coveted recruit. Mulkey compared her to NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, calling her “baby Jokic” and saying she’s “really, really going to be special” .
The freshman displayed soft touch, refined footwork, and impressive court vision, including a no-look pocket pass to MiLaysia Fulwiley that drew comparisons to the Denver Nuggets star .
But she also struggled with the speed of the college game, turning the ball over multiple times against practice-squad players .
A Roster in Flux
Koval’s departure has left LSU’s frontcourt dangerously thin. The Tigers have only 11 players on the roster, and Spanish forward Noa Morro will miss the start of the season with a stress fracture in her shin .
Koval, meanwhile, received an NCAA waiver allowing her to transfer immediately and has landed at Baylor, where she will play for Kim Mulkey’s former program .
Baylor coach Nicki Collen praised the addition: “She can be a decision maker on the perimeter both as a scorer and facilitator, which will expand our offense. Her shot-blocking ability will help anchor our defense” .
What’s Next for Minaeva
Sources close to the situation indicate that Minaeva remains committed to LSU for now, but the pressure is immense. She is expected to play a rotational role this season, potentially more given the team’s lack of frontcourt depth .
Mulkey said it “remains to be seen” how much Minaeva can contribute to a title-contending team this season .
“She’s fundamentally sound. She has tremendous footwork,” Mulkey said. “She is a young lady that understands English very well. She is a big 6-5” .
But the question remains: can Minaeva focus on basketball when her presence has become the center of a geopolitical firestorm? And will the LSU community embrace a player whose arrival cost the Tigers one of their most promising returning players?
For now, Minaeva continues to practice, continues to learn, and continues to try to prove that Mulkey’s bet on her was worth the cost.
