INJURY UPDATE: Dak Prescott injury news emerges before Buccaneers-Cowboys game on TNF

DALLAS — Dak Prescott will play Thursday night. That is the headline the Dallas Cowboys and their fans have been waiting for since Sunday evening, when the franchise quarterback emerged from a 34-30 comeback victory over the Houston Texans with his right throwing hand wrapped in a thick bandage.

By Tuesday, the panic had subsided. Prescott practiced without a wrap. He has not appeared on the injury report. And head coach Brian Schottenheimer was cracking jokes about the whole thing.

But for a franchise that has been conditioned to expect the worst when it comes to its quarterback, the past 72 hours have been a familiar exercise in collective anxiety — one that, this time at least, appears to have a happy ending.

The Injury: A Cleat to the Throwing Hand

The scare occurred in the second quarter of Sunday’s win over Houston. Pressured by Texans edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, Prescott threw the ball away and was flagged for intentional grounding. As he went down, a cleat came down on his right hand — his throwing hand .

Prescott stayed in the game. He finished with 335 passing yards and a game-winning touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb with 40 seconds remaining . But when he met with reporters afterward, his hand was wrapped.

“Perfectly fine,” Prescott said at the time. “Just wrapped so it doesn’t get swollen . . . or more swollen” .

The memory of 2022 loomed large. In the season opener that year, Prescott fractured his right thumb against these very same Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an injury that required surgery and cost him five games . For anyone who has followed this team, a wrapped throwing hand on a short week was reason enough to hold their breath.

The Update: No Concerns, No Designation

By Monday, the wrap was gone. The Athletic’s Jon Machota posted a photo of Prescott’s bare hand, reporting that there was “no concern” about the injury .

On Tuesday, Schottenheimer addressed the situation with characteristic humor.

“Great, yeah, great,” Schottenheimer said. “I think they might have gotten one of his tattoos, he might have to have it redone. But I think he is going to be OK” .

Prescott was a full participant in practice throughout the week. He carries no injury designation for Thursday night. He is, by every available measure, good to go .

What It Means for the Cowboys

The stakes are straightforward. Dallas sits at 2-2 after a dramatic divisional win over Houston. A victory Thursday against the winless Buccaneers would push the Cowboys above .500 and build momentum before a Week 6 trip to Green Bay .

Prescott has been excellent through four games, throwing for 1,065 yards with a 105.0 passer rating . The offense has found its rhythm under Schottenheimer, and Prescott’s connection with Lamb remains among the league’s most productive.

The concern now shifts from Prescott’s hand to his protection. Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles is notorious for exotic pressures and disguised blitzes designed to force quick decisions and punish indecision . The Texans sacked Prescott three times and hit him 12 times on Sunday . If Dallas cannot hold up in the interior, Prescott’s health — not just his hand — becomes a weekly referendum.

Help may be on the way. All-Pro left guard Tyler Smith, who underwent thumb surgery just days before the season began, was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice and is listed as questionable. His return would provide a significant boost to an offensive line that has been without its best interior blocker .

The Buccaneers’ Situation

Tampa Bay arrives in Arlington in far worse shape. The Buccaneers have ruled out four players, including starting quarterback Baker Mayfield (thumb), who will miss his second consecutive game. Rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second career start after throwing for 148 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 17-14 loss to Green Bay .

Also out for Tampa Bay: starting safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib), cornerback Benjamin Morrison (quad), and linebacker SirVocea Dennis (ankle/foot) . The Cowboys are 8.5-point favorites .

The Bottom Line

For a team and a fanbase that has learned to expect the worst, the news out of Frisco this week qualifies as a genuine relief. Prescott’s hand is fine. He will play. The Cowboys can exhale — at least until the next hit.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET Thursday at AT&T Stadium, with coverage on Prime Video.
