Alabama Basketball Lands Five-Star Forward Zion Green, Building Momentum Toward Elite 2027 Class
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama basketball has secured a commitment from five-star forward Zion Green, a significant recruiting victory that continues head coach Nate Oats’ remarkable run of assembling top-tier talent in Tuscaloosa.
Green, a 6-foot-9, 185-pound prospect from AZ Compass Prep in Arizona, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide over a final group that included Kansas, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma . He is ranked as the No. 16 overall recruit in ESPN’s SCNext 100 and the No. 2 power forward in the 2027 class .
The Philadelphia native took an official visit to Alabama in September and came away impressed by both the program’s playing style and Oats’ coaching approach.
“When I attended practice, they were intense,” Green told ESPN. “Coach Oats holds all of his players accountable. But off the court, he’s funny and likes to joke around.”
Green cited Alabama’s up-tempo system as a primary factor in his decision, noting that the Crimson Tide’s style of play fits his skill set perfectly.
“Their play style fits my game,” Green said. “They play an up-tempo game and have had success in the past with players who have my type of frame and skill set.”
Standing at 6-foot-9 with a lanky frame, Green possesses significant upside. His performance at the Border League drew attention, where he shot an impressive 73 percent from the field, including 40 percent from beyond the arc . That combination of interior scoring and perimeter shooting makes him an ideal fit for Oats’ high-volume three-point attack.
Green becomes the second member of Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class, joining four-star guard Chase Lumpkin, who committed on September 9 . Lumpkin, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound combo guard from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia, is a consensus top-30 prospect ranked No. 26 nationally .
The addition of Green vaulted Alabama’s 2027 class into the upper echelon of national recruiting rankings. According to The Crimson White, the Crimson Tide surged to the third-ranked class in the nation following Green’s commitment, trailing only SEC rival LSU and Duke .
Oats has now secured six five-star recruits since taking over the Alabama program in 2019, a testament to his recruiting prowess and the staff’s ability to identify and develop elite talent. Assistant coach Preston Murphy has been instrumental in the Crimson Tide’s recruiting success, particularly in building relationships with prospects and their families .
The commitment from Green continues Alabama’s remarkable recruiting momentum. The Crimson Tide are now positioned to potentially land their fourth consecutive top-10 recruiting class under Oats . With the November signing period approaching, Alabama’s 2027 class currently ranks No. 15 nationally per 247Sports, but that number is expected to rise significantly with Green in the fold .
Alabama’s recruiting efforts may not be finished yet. Four-star center Yohane Kabongo, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound prospect from Daytona Beach, Florida, is set to announce his college decision on Sunday. Alabama is a finalist alongside Mississippi State and Tennessee . Kabongo took an official visit to Tuscaloosa on October 23 and is regarded as a perfect fit for Alabama’s switchable defensive scheme due to his 7-foot-2 wingspan and explosive athleticism .
Should Kabongo choose the Crimson Tide, Alabama’s 2027 class would likely vault into the top five nationally, further cementing Oats’ reputation as one of college basketball’s premier recruiters.
The Green commitment also highlights Alabama’s growing reputation as a destination for elite forwards. The program has produced NBA talent at the position in recent years, including Brandon Miller, who was selected second overall in the 2023 NBA Draft after a stellar freshman season in Tuscaloosa. Green’s skill set and physical profile draw comparisons to Miller, and he will have the opportunity to develop in a system that has consistently maximized the talents of lengthy, skilled forwards.
For now, Alabama fans can celebrate a major recruiting victory as the Crimson Tide continue to build toward a future that promises to keep the program among the nation’s elite. With Green and Lumpkin in the fold and Kabongo potentially on the horizon, Oats and his staff are assembling a class that could rival any in program history.
