The first lady also planned to attend the LSU-Alabama football game in the afternoon.

BATON ROUGE, La. — First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Louisiana on Saturday to announce a major scholarship partnership between LSU and her “Fostering the Future” initiative, and she plans to attend the LSU-Alabama football game in the afternoon, according to the White House.

The visit centers on a $5 million endowment fund that will provide scholarships for LSU students who have experienced the foster care system. The White House did not specify the source of the funding. The foster care program will be featured across the LSU campus and on the field at Tiger Stadium just before kickoff.

Trump launched “Fostering the Future” after President Donald Trump’s first term ended in 2021, creating the program to provide resources and support, including scholarships. LSU is among more than 20 colleges and universities nationwide that participate.

The first lady’s decision to attend the LSU-Alabama game adds a high-profile presence to one of college football’s most heated regional rivalries. Both teams entered the week in contention for a College Football Playoff berth. President Trump was not scheduled to attend Saturday’s game, making this a solo trip for the first lady.

Trump has attended LSU games before. She accompanied the president to the 2020 national championship game in New Orleans, where LSU defeated Clemson. Donald Trump also attended a 2019 LSU-Alabama game in Tuscaloosa.

The visit is expected to bring increased security and possible campus closures around Tiger Stadium, with LSU Athletics advising ticket holders to expect delays. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. local time.
