It has been confirmed that Brisbane Broncos co-captain Patrick Carrigan will leave the club at the end of the 2025 NRL season, marking a major shift in the club’s leadership and forward pack. The 27-year-old lock has signed a massive four-year deal with the Melbourne Storm, set to begin in 2026.
Carrigan’s departure comes as a shock to many within the Broncos community, given his deep connection to the club and his status as one of the NRL’s most respected forwards. Since debuting in 2019, Carrigan has become a cornerstone of the Broncos’ rebuild, earning accolades for his toughness, leadership, and professionalism on and off the field. He has also become a regular for Queensland in State of Origin and has represented Australia at the international level, winning the Wally Lewis Medal in 2022.
In an emotional internal statement to teammates and staff, Carrigan expressed gratitude for his time at Brisbane, calling the club his home and acknowledging how difficult the decision was. However, he said he felt it was the right time for a new challenge and looked forward to finishing the 2025 season with the same intensity and pride he’s always shown in Broncos colours.

Brisbane officials have acknowledged that salary cap pressures and long-term planning played a role in Carrigan’s departure, despite efforts to retain him. The club has praised his impact and professionalism, calling him a leader who helped restore the pride and culture of the Broncos during a critical period.
At Melbourne Storm, Carrigan is expected to slot into a leadership role immediately. The Storm view his signing as a key part of their next-generation core, with hopes that he will help guide the club back to premiership glory after several seasons of near misses.
For Brisbane, the loss of Carrigan will be felt not only in his defensive presence and work rate but also in the example he sets off the field. As he prepares for his final season in Brisbane, both fans and teammates will no doubt rally behind him in the hope of a fitting send-off.
The 2025 season now takes on extra meaning for Carrigan and the Broncos, as they look to contend for a title with one of their most beloved figures preparing to say goodbye.
