LSU enters the 2026 college football season with enormous expectations after making one of the biggest coaching and roster moves in the country. With Lane Kiffin now leading the program and a revamped roster that includes quarterback Sam Leavitt, the Tigers are being viewed as a legitimate contender. ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives LSU a 4.1% chance of winning the national championship, according to the latest figures reported from the model.
A 4.1% championship probability may not sound overwhelming, but it places LSU firmly in the national-title conversation. The Tigers are not being projected as the favorite, yet ESPN’s model recognizes that they have enough talent and potential to make a deep postseason run.
The expectations surrounding LSU are largely connected to Kiffin’s arrival. After producing high-powered offenses at Ole Miss, Kiffin takes over an LSU program coming off a 7-6 season. The Tigers have aggressively rebuilt their roster through the transfer portal, bringing in players capable of making an immediate impact. ESPN’s projections therefore have to account not only for returning talent but also for the potential improvement created by the coaching change and transfer additions.
The quarterback factor
One of the biggest reasons LSU has legitimate championship potential is Leavitt. The Arizona State transfer gives Kiffin an experienced quarterback who can potentially transform the offense. LSU’s success will depend heavily on how quickly Leavitt becomes comfortable in the new system and, perhaps most importantly, how healthy he remains.
The quarterback position is especially important in Kiffin’s offense. His system places significant responsibility on the quarterback to make decisions, distribute the football and take advantage of defensive weaknesses.
A difficult SEC path
The biggest obstacle to LSU’s championship hopes could be the SEC itself. The Tigers will have to survive one of the deepest conferences in college football before even reaching the College Football Playoff.
ESPN’s title projections currently put LSU behind several national contenders. Current championship betting markets listed by ESPN have LSU at +1800, or 18-1, behind teams such as Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, Oregon, Georgia, Indiana and Miami.
That difference illustrates the challenge facing LSU. The Tigers have the talent to compete with the country’s best teams, but they must prove that talent can translate into consistent wins.
What LSU needs to do
For LSU to outperform ESPN’s 4.1% projection, several things must happen. Leavitt needs to stay healthy and become the leader Kiffin expects him to be. The offensive line must provide enough protection for the new quarterback, while the defense needs to develop into a unit capable of winning close SEC games.
Most importantly, LSU cannot afford to waste opportunities against highly ranked opponents. In the expanded College Football Playoff era, reaching the postseason gives a talented team a chance to make its championship percentage meaningless once the tournament begins.
