Mathieu van der Poel has officially extended his long-standing relationship with Team Alpecin–Deceuninck by signing a new five-year contract that will keep him with the team until the end of the 2028 season. This announcement, made in March 2024, put to rest any speculation about his departure after 2025. The new agreement also includes an option for year-by-year extensions following the 2028 season, effectively giving Van der Poel the flexibility to continue racing on his terms.
This new deal replaces his previous contract, which was set to run through 2025. The decision to dissolve that agreement and replace it with a longer commitment reflects the deep trust and mutual satisfaction between Van der Poel and the team’s leadership, particularly the Roodhooft brothers, who have been central to his career since he joined their structure in 2011. By the end of his new contract, Van der Poel will have spent 18 years with the organization—an extraordinary duration in modern professional cycling.
In a public statement, Van der Poel expressed that extending his stay with Alpecin–Deceuninck was an obvious decision. He highlighted his comfort within the team’s structure and praised the multidisciplinary approach that allows him to compete across road racing, cyclocross, and mountain biking. He emphasized that his passion for the sport remains strong and that he still feels driven to achieve more.
Alongside his new team contract, Van der Poel also signed a major 10-year partnership with Canyon Bicycles, the team’s equipment sponsor. This agreement will see him continue riding Canyon bikes through 2028, after which he will transition into a global ambassador role for the brand. The dual announcements signal both his long-term commitment to the sport and the continuation of his legacy with the companies and people who have supported him from the early stages of his career.
The contract renewal was warmly received by fans and the cycling world alike, solidifying Van der Poel’s place not only as one of the most dominant and versatile riders of his generation but also as a central figure in the future of Alpecin–Deceuninck. Far from signaling the end of an era, this news confirms that Van der Poel’s remarkable journey with the team is set to continue—on his terms, and with even more history left to write.
