Training camp is often dominated by the biggest storylines. Quarterback competitions, star players returning from injury, and blockbuster offseason additions usually grab the headlines. Yet every summer, there are a handful of players who quietly impress coaches and reporters through consistent performances rather than flashy plays. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of those under-the-radar performers has been defensive lineman Yahya Black.
Steelers insider Mark Kaboly recently identified Black as a “quiet standout” of training camp, pointing to the rookie’s ability to consistently disrupt plays from the interior of the defensive line. While he may not be producing highlight-reel sacks every day, Kaboly emphasized that Black has shown the kind of strength and technique that allows him to collapse the pocket—an invaluable skill for Pittsburgh’s defense.
Kaboly noted that Black is “going to push the pocket,” a phrase that carries significant meaning in defensive football. Interior pressure can be just as damaging as edge pressure because it forces quarterbacks to step out of their comfort zone. Rather than climbing the pocket to avoid outside rushers, quarterbacks are forced into hurried throws or scramble situations when the middle caves in.
The Steelers have long valued dominant defensive linemen capable of controlling the line of scrimmage. While veterans like Cameron Heyward remain the leaders of the unit, Pittsburgh has been looking to develop younger players who can eventually take on larger roles. Black appears to be making a strong early case that he can become part of that future.
Standing well over 6 feet tall with impressive size and power, Black has used his physical tools effectively throughout camp. Observers have noted his ability to occupy multiple blockers while still generating movement at the point of attack. That combination makes him valuable against both the run and the pass.
His performance has also highlighted the importance of depth along the defensive front. NFL seasons are physically demanding, and defensive linemen rotate frequently to stay fresh. If Black continues his upward trajectory, he could earn meaningful snaps even as a rookie, allowing the Steelers to keep their veteran defenders rested during long drives.
Coaches have reportedly praised Black’s willingness to learn and his steady improvement with each practice. Rather than trying to do too much, he has focused on mastering his assignments and refining his technique. That disciplined approach often helps young defensive linemen transition more smoothly to the NFL.
Another encouraging aspect of Black’s camp has been his consistency. While many rookies experience highs and lows during their first professional practices, Black has reportedly delivered solid performances day after day. Consistency is one of the traits coaching staffs value most because it builds trust when deciding playing time.
The Steelers’ defensive identity has always been built around physicality and relentless pressure. Although outside linebackers often receive the attention for sack totals, interior defenders who collapse the pocket make life significantly easier for edge rushers. If Black continues developing into that type of player, he could become an important complementary piece alongside Pittsburgh’s established stars.
There is still plenty of work ahead before the regular season begins. Preseason games and joint practices will provide tougher tests, and earning a permanent spot in the defensive rotation won’t come easily. Nevertheless, Black has put himself firmly on the radar through a series of impressive training camp performances.
For now, he may remain one of the quieter stories in Steelers camp, but if he continues to push the pocket the way Kaboly expects, he may not stay under the radar for much longer. Pittsburgh could have found another valuable contributor on its defensive line, one whose impact extends far beyond the traditional stat sheet.
