T.J. Watt’s stubborn habit may have cost him more than anyone knew

For years, T.J. Watt has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s fiercest competitors. The Pittsburgh Steelers superstar has earned multiple All-Pro selections, a Defensive Player of the Year award, and recognition as one of the league’s premier pass rushers. His relentless motor and commitment to excellence have made him the heartbeat of Pittsburgh’s defense. However, one habit that has defined his playing style may have come at a greater cost than many initially realized.

Watt has never been known for taking plays off. Whether chasing quarterbacks from sideline to sideline or fighting through blocks late in games, he consistently gives maximum effort. That relentless approach has helped him post elite sack numbers and create game-changing turnovers. At the same time, it has exposed him to additional punishment over the course of long NFL seasons.

The Steelers have often relied heavily on Watt, leaving him on the field for an overwhelming percentage of defensive snaps. Rather than asking for regular breathers, Watt has frequently embraced the workload, believing his presence gives the defense its best chance to succeed. While admirable, that stubborn determination may have contributed to the wear and tear that has led to injuries over the years.

Football is a physical sport, and edge rushers absorb constant contact from offensive tackles, tight ends, and running backs. Every snap requires explosive movements, violent hand fighting, and high-speed collisions. By refusing to ease up or rotate out more frequently, Watt has placed tremendous strain on his body.

The effects became evident during seasons in which injuries interrupted his dominance. Even when less than 100 percent healthy, Watt often fought to return as quickly as possible, unwilling to let teammates shoulder the burden alone. His competitive nature has always been one of his greatest strengths, but it may also have prevented him from allowing his body adequate time to recover.

Coaches and teammates have consistently praised Watt’s toughness. His willingness to play through pain has inspired those around him and reinforced the culture of accountability within Pittsburgh’s locker room. Yet the NFL has increasingly recognized the importance of workload management, even for its biggest stars.

Many successful defenses now rotate pass rushers to keep everyone fresh throughout games and across the season. The strategy not only reduces fatigue but also helps limit injury risk while maintaining a high level of intensity late in contests. For a player like Watt, strategic rest could ultimately extend his effectiveness without diminishing his impact.

Fortunately for the Steelers, the organization has continued investing in defensive depth. Young edge rushers and rotational players can help absorb some of the workload, allowing Watt to remain explosive in critical situations. Rather than viewing occasional rest as a weakness, Pittsburgh may benefit from preserving its franchise defender for the moments that matter most.

Watt’s leadership extends beyond statistics. His preparation, work ethic, and intensity have set the standard for younger players entering the organization. Those qualities are unlikely to change, regardless of how the coaching staff manages his playing time. If anything, a healthier Watt could be even more productive over the course of a full season.

As the Steelers pursue another playoff run, balancing Watt’s competitive instincts with smart long-term management will be essential. His stubborn refusal to leave the field has undoubtedly helped produce some of the greatest performances of his career. But it may also have cost him more physically than many outside the organization ever realized.

If Pittsburgh can strike the right balance between maximizing Watt’s availability and protecting his health, both the player and the franchise could reap the benefits. After all, an elite T.J. Watt on the field in December and January is far more valuable than a worn-down version who has spent months battling unnecessary wear and tear.
