Alabama 5-star freshman CB sidelined with injury, per report

Alabama has received an unfortunate injury update involving one of the most highly touted freshmen on its 2026 roster.

Five-star cornerback Jorden Edmonds is expected to miss at least a few weeks after suffering a lower-body injury during preseason practice, according to reports from 247Sports’ Alex Scarborough and Brett Greenberg. The injury reportedly occurred during practice and not during Alabama’s first preseason scrimmage.

The setback comes at an unfortunate time for Edmonds, who had been building considerable momentum since arriving in Tuscaloosa. The former five-star prospect was the third-highest-ranked recruit in Alabama’s 2026 class and was ranked No. 20 nationally by 247Sports.

Edmonds had already given Alabama fans plenty of reasons to be excited. His combination of size, athleticism and coverage ability made him one of the freshmen expected to challenge for meaningful playing time sooner rather than later. He also impressed during spring practice, putting himself firmly in the conversation for a role in a talented Crimson Tide secondary.

Now, instead of continuing his development on the field, Edmonds will have to focus on recovering and getting back to full strength.

The good news for Alabama is that the report does not indicate a season-ending injury. Edmonds is expected to miss a few weeks, meaning there remains a possibility that he can return early enough to contribute during the season.

Still, the timing creates a challenge.

Alabama already has significant experience at cornerback, with returning players Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee expected to anchor the position. That experience should help the Crimson Tide absorb Edmonds’ absence, while players such as Chuck McDonald and other newcomers will have opportunities to increase their workloads.

Edmonds’ injury could nevertheless affect Alabama’s plans for its younger defensive backs. Fall camp is especially important for freshmen because every practice provides valuable opportunities to learn the defensive system, build chemistry with teammates and earn trust from the coaching staff.

Missing several weeks could slow Edmonds’ development, particularly with the season opener approaching.

At the same time, Alabama’s depth at cornerback gives defensive coordinator Kane Wommack options. The Crimson Tide entered camp believing the secondary could once again be one of the team’s biggest strengths, and the returning experience at the position provides some insurance.

For Edmonds, the priority now is simple: recover properly rather than rush back.

A healthy return could still allow the five-star freshman to become an important contributor during the 2026 campaign. His talent has already generated plenty of excitement, and Alabama clearly has high expectations for him.

For now, though, the Crimson Tide will have to wait.
