The Pittsburgh Steelers may have entered the 2026 preseason with Aaron Rodgers firmly established as their veteran quarterback, but rookie Drew Allar has given the franchise—and its fans—another reason to believe the future could be in very good hands.
Allar delivered an outstanding NFL debut Thursday night, helping Pittsburgh cruise to a 28-9 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The third-round pick completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown. His performance produced a near-perfect passer rating and immediately became one of the biggest talking points of the preseason.
More importantly, Allar looked comfortable.
The former Penn State quarterback entered the game with plenty to prove. Although he possessed tremendous physical talent coming out of college, his final season at Penn State was disrupted by injury and inconsistency. That contributed to his surprising slide to No. 76 overall, where the Steelers selected him in the third round.
Pittsburgh may now be wondering whether it got a potential starting quarterback far later than expected.
Allar’s numbers were impressive, but the way he produced them was even more encouraging. He showed accuracy, confidence and the ability to make aggressive throws without appearing overwhelmed by the speed of the NFL. His touchdown passes to Kaden Wetjen and Riley Nowakowski highlighted his ability to distribute the ball effectively.
One of the most impressive moments came on a 75-yard completion, demonstrating the arm strength that made Allar such an intriguing prospect coming out of Penn State. He also showed mobility by finding the end zone on the ground.
Of course, one preseason game cannot determine whether Allar will become a franchise quarterback. He faced backup-level competition, and Pittsburgh’s coaching staff will want to see how he responds to more complex defenses and difficult situations.
But that doesn’t make the performance meaningless.
For the Steelers, the biggest takeaway may be that Allar appears to be developing quickly. Teammates have already praised his confidence and command of the offense, while coaches have pointed to his ability to absorb coaching and make adjustments.
That could be extremely valuable as Pittsburgh enters a new chapter under head coach Mike McCarthy.
Rodgers remains the expected starter, but at 42 years old, the Steelers have to think beyond the present. Allar gives Pittsburgh an intriguing developmental option who could potentially become the face of the franchise once Rodgers’ career ends.
That is why Thursday’s performance created so much excitement.
Steelers fans aren’t simply celebrating a preseason victory. They’re imagining what Allar could become.
The organization doesn’t need to rush him. In fact, the ideal scenario may be allowing Allar to learn behind Rodgers, develop his mechanics and understand the demands of professional football before eventually taking over.
Still, the rookie’s debut has already changed the conversation.
Allar wasn’t perfect because he played a preseason game against backups. He was impressive because he looked like someone who belonged.
And if this is only the beginning, Pittsburgh may have found the quarterback who eventually ushers the Steelers into their next era.
